Give me some examples or advice please. My sisters are thinking diamond earrings. I think diamonds are gay, because of the whole artificially inflated price issue. Maybe some other stone would be better. But if not earrings or jewellery, what else? We’re thinking in a price range of R1000 to R1300.

Book her in for a complete Spa weekend.

Mani/pedi, full body massage, the whole works.

Trust me on this one.

The spa weekend sounds good :)

But jewelery is also really nice and special. Don't get the diamond earrings, they are so unoriginal! Maybe get her a locket with a small diamond on the cover and her name engraved with the date on the back. Then you could put a picture of the family in. It's sentimental and pretty!

Just get something that holds a good memory for her. Something she will know you put thought into.

Spa day is a nice idea; I'm sure she could use the pampering!
Maybe a piece of jewellery with her birth stone? Or a stone you know she likes? While a spa day is great, having something physical is also nice.

I think the important thing is something personal.

The woman brought you and your siblings into this world and gave away decades of her life to look after you and give you a chance at life.

Jewellery, in my (possibly quite daft) opinion is a lame gift indeed.

I don't know....

... Go through family photos and make some sort of record of your family life, make a DVD of this, with her favourite music in the background and sincerely thank your mother for all she has done for you at each momentous event depicted in the photographic history...

Or something, just not jewellery!

/\

Incorporate all that madness into a custom book, which I am sure is possible.

(except, of course, for the music)

you get birthday cards with music, why not a book with music :p

They play the 'happy birthday' song. Doesn't sound that great, granted, but it's a birthday card that plays 'happy birthday' to you when you open it.
There's a market out there for anything :D

I made no claim to it being any good :p

But your willingness to eat headgear of my choice makes me want to find/make one that satisfies the requirement...

By all means, although 'vaguely intelligible quality' and 'compilation of lifetime hits' is to be defined and judged by myself. :p

Up th budget and get her a nice Seiko watch...and a bottle of Bulgari (BVLGARI) purfume...if you are the only son in amongst a couple of sisters then you will always be the winner and she will tell everyone how your dad sucks and how you are just the best and greatest and know just what she wants...

So perfume like Chanel No5 a no no also? I suck at gifts. Just get a damn voucher and let her get what she wants is what I do! Then taker her out to dinner. :-)

If it's someone you care for, then I think unique and personal is he way to go. Perfume, etc, etc. It's so generic. But that's just me.

For example, for my mother's birthday, a couple of years ago, I gave her a rare cactus, settled into a toilet. Weird, I know, but I knew she'd much rather have that than perfume. And I can assure you, no one else has ever got the same gift.

I dunno, I've found that I can't offer anything material to my folks (both well in their 50's), so I spend a day writing them a poem, or a story. Make it look pretty awesome to fit the bill, and they seem to enjoy it more than any gift I've bought for them... My Dad says " Something from the heart is something that will touch mine".

get all the old photo's starting from her wedding day, the photos of you kids from birth growing up etc and make a hand made quilt. if you can't do it get someone to do it for you.

My mom is turning 55 this Saturday and I also do not have a clue what to get her, she is already getting her first grandkid, so I am not sure I can better that. :p

A new handbag and fill it with small items, a lipstick, R300 cash, small perfume, a good chocolate, scented handcream, a music cd or dvd, a family photo, and a letter of appreciation and congratulations.
