The principal of an Israeli school near Gaza has been summoned before the education ministry over a textbook giving Israeli and Palestinian narratives of the conflict, a newspaper said on Monday.

The textbook, Learning the Historical Narrative of the Other, covers both Israeli and Palestinian views of the violence around the time of Israel's birth in 1948, the left-leaning daily reported.

Each page is split into three, with the Israeli narrative on the right, the Palestinian version on the left and a blank column in the middle for students to enter their own thoughts.

"On the second day of the school year the instruction came down not to use the book because it was not approved," said an unnamed teacher at Shaar HaNegev school near Sderot, an Israeli town once the target of near-daily rocket fire from Gaza.

"This was a knee-jerk response, almost Pavlovian, to any attempt by the educational system to tackle the Palestinian side," the teacher said, accusing the ministry of not even bothering to ask how the material was being used.

Arabs refer to it as the "Nakba", or "catastrophe" because some 750 000 Palestinians, the majority of the Arab population of the Palestine Mandate, fled or were driven from their homes.

Last year, the ministry banned the use of the word "Nakba" in school textbooks as part of a larger effort to promote Jewish identity.

I have to say I'm somewhat disgusted by Israel's stance on this, particularly as I've always viewed them as a democratic nation surrounded by autocracies. Censorship is never the way, even if you're allegedly doing it to promote a national "identity", and not telling the other side of the story is hardly going to engender improved Israeli-Palestinian relations.
 
If you read the 'left' leaning Israeli media, you'll learn about some of the terrible deeds committed by this regime. They're only interested in pushing a zionist agenda because "everyone wants to drive them in the sea". Sure a few crazies want to do that, but becoming crazy yourself and comitting crazy acts is the not way to a prosperous future.

They are shameful, just as shameful as their neighbours.
 
ANC changed our history books ..... what's the big deal about someone else doing it, they're hardly alone in it.

Agree with the OP, when both sides are acknowledged it at least leaves it up to future generations to decide on sides.
 
pretty sad. I wish they wouldn't do this. Knowledge is the key to understanding and will bring hope for the future. That is... if both sides are willing to forsake violence. You know the rest of the story.

That's pretty kind on the Israeli's, when you consider that they until a couple of months ago they prevented school books from entering the Gaza Strip. They collectively punish the people of Gaza in many ways and one of them is to prevent kids from attending school. They are disgusting :(

Not that the surrounding nations are exactly innocent, but Israel is guilty of some of the worst war crimes in the last few decades.

but then, this is what religion gets you. Nearly genetically identical people fighting over an ancient city in a desert because of the voices they hear.
 
This really doesnt surprise me, not only does Israel perpetrate horrific atrocities on the displaced, occupied Palestinians but they also have an active policy of discrimination against arabs in israel, its apartheid 2.0

You forgot to mention that the Arabs attack Israel on many occasions which resulted in their current predicament. Before you attract a nation you must realise that their will be consequences if you lose.

Its not like a single person here knows or even cares what the official text books teach.

Its not like every single country in the world has official school curriculum's, but ROFL, if the Israelsi have one and abide by it, the horror of horrors.

No, I'm talking about the larger context, the quotes you posted about Islamic education teaching their students about Jihad and the Jews. Their behaviour makes them both idiots.

As for the textbook, its silly to try control things too much. This doesnt seem like questionable or contraband material. How many of your teachers brought in their own books, or had their favourite textbooks? Not everything needs to be done according to the letter of the law.

are you really trying to justifying the butchery of innocent Arab civilians ? their is a big difference between the current Israeli system of apartheid and ethnic cleansing and any attempts the Arabs have made at self defense, should the oppressed Gazans and those in the occupied west bank just sit back and take whatever Israel gives them? also the previous wars against Israel by arab states all had a legitimate purpose, only now we see what a destabalising affect Israel is having on the entire middle eastern region.
