Cop car set alight in Joburg riot

Johannesburg - A metro police vehicle was set alight during a protest near Johannesburg's Malibongwe Drive on Tuesday.

"There were riots since early this morning. About 30 minutes ago one of our patrol vehicles, a Quantum, was set on fire," said spokesperson Edna Mamonyane.

Officers called for back up and more units arrived to support those already on the scene.

Eyewitnesses said thousands of residents took to the streets on Tuesday morning over housing issues and turned on metro police when the officers tried to prevent them from demonstrating.

Locals claim they have been waiting for proper houses since 2004. They have also demanded that Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane address the issue and visit the area.
