Sources familiar with the affair said Avital was fired over past statements he had made, in which he questioned evolution and the global warming theory. Avital, who was named chief scientist in December 2009, said Darwinism should be analyzed critically along with biblical creationism.

Avital added, “If they keep writing in textbooks that the Earth is growing warmer because of carbon dioxide emissions, I’ll insist that isn’t the case.”

If only all countries were not afraid to fire ministers who are blatantly unfit for their jobs, the world would be a much more effective place.

i'm torn, i believe in evolution but not so much in global warming

I just love this one. The scientists are bashing each other over global warming.
I followed a bit and it seems that some data that might not have fitted the theories of some global warming model was excluded. Not very scientific.

Is there Global warming? Yes. What’s the culprit? It appears to be man and nature.

I want to know why there are currently so many documentaries now dealing with;
1) Mega earthquakes and tsunamis from the past (End of dinosaurs)
2) Repetitive ice ages and warming flooding (USA Grand canyon etc) (End of dinosaurs)
3) Mega volcano’s (Yellowstone park) (End of dinosaurs)
4) Mega asteroids meteorites striking earth (End of dinosaurs.)
5) Global warming flooding/drought/food & water shortages/Tornados etc.

Are they trying to tell us that it is the end of mankind as being the current dinosaurs?
Do they know something we don’t? I need to stock up on some tinfoil
:)

Stick to scripture you know nothing about science.

Stop believing and start looking at the evidence if you want to have a more accurate idea.

i have, and while this isn't as easy as debunking creationism i see no threat in global warming, or anything different to what has been happening since the beginning of time. you will get radicals from both sides that will shoot down arguments and reasoning from the other side simply because they have a side. i am very keen on looking after the environment, i do think pollution affects people negatively, but i genuinely can't see merit in the idea of global warming. i am not saying others are wrong, i am just saying that there hasn't been enough evidence to sway me

What Geriatrix said - you shouldn't "believe in" anything. You should look at the facts and form your own opinion based on those.
Also, you don't have to agree with Global Warming THEORIES just because you accept Evolution. One's not based on the other. Why would you be torn?

Avital told Ynetnews that he was fired "because of an interview I gave to the press, not because I didn't do my job well." He added, "In the interview I expressed my opinion on evolution, science and literature — there was no negative response to the interview, only good feedback."

As a scientist you don't have an opinion, you stick to facts and evidence. His opinion on controversial issues caused him to lose credibility as a scientist and researcher. I think in short, he over-stepped the boundaries of his job description.

believe was a bad word, because i KNOW evolution is true, but my interest in global warming hasn't been as intense as research into evolution. just that most people that "believe" in evolution also believe in global warming, and from the opposing group vice versa.

global warming has become popular through Al Gore, who is a leftist and environmentalist, and now Global Warming has become seen as a leftist agenda. i was criticising agnostics last week for not being able to make firmer decisions based on the evidence that they were presented with, but i never actually considered that agnostics may not actually be interested in either group, just as i was not interested in the whole global warming story. i am willing to admit i am ignorant of it, but i am leaning to the side of global warming being greatly exaggerated.

Sounds like its not the fact that its happening or even so much what causes it that bother you. You just don't see the effects of it as that serious.

So may I suggest reading up on past environmental changes and its impact on people? I read an article the other day on what happened with some viking communities when their environment changed a bit too much. It was scary ****.

Yeah global warming is nothing new. Its been going on for ages. And there does appear to be evidence that human actions are tipping it to the warmer end again. And its easy to say its "natural" and part of the natural cycles but the thing is somewhere someones is going to suffer greatly from the changes in the environment natural or not.
And all this fighting to deny its existence or causes is pointless. Rather fight on how to deal with it.

Ditto as to your mineer debates :)

Unlikely, as proven, non-religious people know more about religion than religious people and its pretty evident that that does not apply in the reverse :D

:D LOL. So who (other than little old me:) ) above is debating the very scientific issues? ;)

As I recall from reading about it there are two camps. One side supported by government/business interests scientists and the other side more pure academic scientists  :D

And your point is what exactly?

And your point is what exactly?

That it is scientists that are debating with scientist regarding the facts??. Causes and effects of global warming. This round the religious is not the bone of contention. I was told to stick to religion as I pointed out that this round it appears to be science vs science? In post 13 I forgot to hit the quote button for no 12, so I apologize for my bad in not quoting post 12. Not very scientific from me. Post 10 was in relation to my comments made in post 4.

BTW. I really do want to know??
Why so many documentaries about the end of the world scenarios??
Is the end neigh but scientists cannot tell us so for fear of mass world panic?

Let's assume we do nothing and there is global warming. You would see no big problem in that the whole Western Cape citrus industry would collapse, and that South Africa as a whole would become a semi-desert area in which it would be much more difficult that it is already to farm? Furthermore is would also affect ocean currents and therefore fishing. AFAIK, warm waters are not exactly known for good and tasty fish.
What do you think the turn-around time in temrs of warming/cooling is for the global weather system?
If there is the minutest possibility that human factors contribute to global warming then we should do everything we can to alleviate it.
Can we risk to devastate the lives of millions of people all over the planet because we don't belief that it is a problem, a belief which is mostly self-serving?

I just don't see the effects of it period :)

I doubt the vikings' had the things that we had today, and if we have people living in -37 degree conditions surely we could survive something even if it were true? :(

i agree that pollution affects people negatively, and that it has a wide scale effect, but i can't imagine the effects being global or as devastating as most people portray it? it just feels like a variation of 2012 to me.

i believe it's important to fight problems and evil in the world, but just because something may or may not be true, does not mean that we should act as if it were true. that is similar to pascals wager.

That's how science works. When someone claims to have made a discovery the rest of the scientific world doesn't immediately accept it as fact - theories are questioned and tested, alternatives are proposed, in fact every effort is made to disprove what is being presented. This is what's called "the scientific process".

Contrast that to religion, where the first words allegedly said by a magical man living in the sky are taken as an infallible truth for all of time and can never be questioned, and I'm sure you'll be able to see why I have more faith in science.

BTW. I really do want to know??

The end is not "neigh" because all of those so-called "documentaries" are based on fear, superstition and conspiracy theories. Hence there is nothing for science to prove or disprove because the facts involved are either made up, or distorted beyond recognition.

I just don't see the effects of it period :)
You mean currently? Or in your life personally?
Give it time. ;)

Until it hits you personally, have a browse here;

Actually I think we'd have less room to maneuver than the vikings. Our whole societies food supply is supported by a large complex, highly interconnected and interdependent industrialized farming system. Like dominoes. Of course our civilizations ace is oil. The thing is that appears to be going in the near future too. Whoops.

Yeah there's some violent speculation on how bad it would be. Its not going to be an overnight thing. More like gradual but hectic changes in the coming 20-70 years. But you have to take notice when documents regarding future resource skirmishes starts leaking on the net.And from the likes of the US and European armies no less.

But time will tell.
