Ja well no fine, hoes maar ratepayers.. :whistle:

Cape Town - Ratepayers will end up paying for Cape Town stadium's operating costs after Sail Stadefrance walked out on a 30-year lease to manage the property.

"We do not have final numbers on what this will cost the ratepayer. In the end it will be up to the citizens of Cape Town on whether they come to the stadium to support the teams and events," the city's acting mayor Ian Neilson told reporters on Wednesday.

The city will take over management of the R4.4bn stadium.

Sail Stadefrance said it had projected "substantial losses" if it took up the project.

Sail Stadefrance Operating Company (SSOC) chief executive Morne du Plessis said "unresolved matters" affecting the viability of the lease, due to start on November 1, and "severe operating constraints" had caused the company to withdraw from the lease.

"The operating cost was surprising," he said.

"The maintenance costs were way above expectations.

Hmmm, now who was again that said that these boys were oh so awesome when it came to running stadia? And that everything would be hunky-dory under their oh-so-wise stewardship? Hehehe.

As predicted by some people on here but we were shot down by Lancelot and Company about our 'negativity' which was really realism. The local soccer derbies have been badly attended from what I've read...

No they haven't. Only one game was poorly attended because Ajax stupidly decided to put out tickets only 3 days before the event. The result was only 3k pitched up

The best thing that could happen would be for the stadium to collapse due to a structural design flaw. Two birds, one stone.
 
Only solution is for them to hand it to WP rugby... if WP are willing that is.
ONLY they can fill that stadium... but because of Newlands history.. I fear this will never happen
 
Agreed.. but they say they can still be added on.. thus the stadium needs to be handed over at no cost
Think it might be enough of a carrot to entice WP.. as one is surely needed... :D
 
WP will not take it because it's too damn expensive to maintain.
Which is exactly what they've been saying all along.

Best action would be to sell the movables and digital items, remove all the light-bulbs and fittings, turn off the lights and water, lock the doors, fire the security companies and hope that there's still something left of the stadium if South Africa ever need it again.
