Advice on selling / auctioning art

Does anyone know anything about the art world ?

Have a painting which a gallery in Cape Town is willing to sell for us - but apparently they take about 45% for the pleasure.

There would be international interest in the painting so was wondering whether it would be an idea to advertise it via the web but don't have a clue how to start - or how not to get ripped off.

Specify payment terms and set firm reserve. Provide as much info as possible an make it sound good. Might wanna try EU eBay sites first.
 
You need a professional to sell the work for you, someone who will know have a list of buyers. Galleries usually take a 40% commission, but this can be negotiated.

It really depends on who the artist is. If they are internationally well known you might need a more reputable dealer like Stephan Welz, but he's a bit of a rip. There is a guy I know who worked with Stephan Weltz and ran a reputable gallery in Joburg, he is very well connected with art buyers, his name is Warren Siebrits. If you want PM me the name of the artist and I'll ask around I have a few contacts and possibly they might have a recommendation for a dealer.

The number one thing you need is patience art is a funny investment, it's great if you can hold onto it and negotiate the price you want, but generally if you have to offload it in a hurry you don't get the asking price.

...and don't use eBay, that would just be foolish. If you do sell it internationally there are certain transportation and logistical issues, I don't think the folks at eBay would be quite willing to help you with
 
I have actually in the past had a few good dealings with Stephen Weltz in association with Sothebys - two items sold through them received more than expected though I can't remember what I paid them in com, but they transfered the funds quickly.

It's currently at a gallery in Cape Town - needs to be reframed before it can go on display.

Painting is 1.44m x 1.03m - artist is Zakkie Eloff.
 
why not try sotheby's or even stephan welz & co as suggested earlier? IMO its the best way to go for art.
