I have two Sim cards, one (prepaid) for the data modem and one (contract) for the phone. The one in the phone is quite old (about 5 years or more) and it has been acting up (dropping calls, not connecting to 3G) so I was advised to change it to a new 64k SIM. I've just upgraded the phone (E72 after 6110 Navigator - very nice) so I figured doing a SIM swap now would be a good idea. Simple enough to do - pop into the Vodashop and a couple of hours later the new SIM is active and working.

Now, thinking that I am responsible for the safe disposal of the old SIM (RICA?) I carefully chop it into bits with scissors and too late I realise...... it's the wrong card (cue vuvuzelas!). I've destroyed my data card with an unused Gig on it.

So I go back to the Vodashop and buy a new blank SIM and RICA and drive home. This is your punishment for being dumb! Load the SIM into a handset and dial 100, but the voice says "this service is not available please call back later". I hang up but moments later an SMS arrives. "Your new number is xxxxxxxxx". Bugger! Call 111 and the nice but unhelpful guy says "tough" (not really, but it comes down to that). Suggests I try again and then call 111 and have them do the SIM swap.

So I go back to Vodashop, etc etc etc. Finally get back and call 111, explain to the nice lady what I want, she does the SIM swap thing and says wait a couple of hours. I do, switch the handset on later and guess what? Another new number! Call 111 and "eishhh!". This kind soul says from what she can see no SIM swap was requested (it was) but she'll log a call and see if they can reverse the registration.

I'm not hopeful but let's see what happens.

Please send me the SR Ref or the number in question.

Which store?

I went yesterday to do the exact same thing. I have an old 32k and thought I'd get a new 128k card, so paid my R105 and took my new card home.

Got home, popped it into another phone and received an SMS saying "Thank you for signing your new 24 month MyGig 1.2 contract'. I'm like 'wtf!' and called 111.

The card I'm using belong to a guy called Francious - and we"re assuming he has my card. I told the guy to cancel to swap and kill that card, as he can make calls on my contract. He said he couldn't kill it - but only do a soft block to block outgoing calls - so he did that. Effect is my number hasn't been able to make calls etc since yesterday at 18.30

Since he can't reach Francious to get his permission to block the card, his is still active - which means I could run up a huge data bill if I really wanted ...

Got mine at Fourways, Jhb.

Looks like SIM swaps are not necessarily as straightforward as one would hope!

Jeez, what a bunch of *******s vodacom are!

I've just confirmed :

She says they only gave me his card, but not the other way around. So I wasn't at risk from someone using my account - but if I was a thief, he may have been at risk :/

I asked her to reissue the SIM swap again to me - but she said she can't until I give the only card back. I thought they could simply cancel the card I have, I'll toss it and they issue a new one?

I can see how that would work if Vodacom wanted to be extra careful, but at this stage surely they should be concerning themselves with getting you sorted out? The priorities are a bit strange.

I've not heard anything yet about my issue, and I'm worried that if I go to the shop and buy another new card and do a SIM swap it's really going to screw things up. How long should I wait for support to get back to me?
