I share a wireless network with two of my friends. If we use Skype to talk to each other, do we use "internet" bandwidth, or is the call routed locally through our LAN?

yes you use internet bandwidth, you still connect to the skype server, and even though you have a local connection, the data is still routed to them over the internet.. It would be nice if they allowed you to run a small skype server on your lan tho... could be very cool at large lan parties:p

According to the skype forum only the initial logging in and directory services require the internet - connections on the lan are p2p. http://forum.skype.com/viewtopic.php?t=35305&highlight=lan

Skype does in fact just connect to the skype server over the internet and then use P2P connections between users. Our Sentech connection often drops at the office and then we can still continue chatting for a while after that.

so why then do they not require you to login once, and when your account has been verified then you can use your skype offline, and only see people who are on your network? that would be so awesome...
i have found the prelude to skype (called p2pvoipbeta or something) which uses IP's to connect and is free. it works, but voice quality is not as good as skype's, obviously.

Skype will look for the best route between two users.
If the better route happens to be the Wireless LAN it will use it. It skype decides the internet is the best route it will go that way.
Depends on a number of facter. But skype should use you LAN when you make a call.
As said before, you need a internet connection to sign in. There after it should all be local.

Reading this thread reminded me of how much I'd like to have a good voice-chat app that would work over a LAN, and not require an internet connection.
First prize would be if Skype would allow one to dial an IP, without being signed in, of course.
Anyone come across such a beast?

it looks like a VERY old version of skype, and the audio quality is not very good but at least its better than typing.
