Like the subject says really, international latencies, local, how much does it generally take to get "shaped" and what sort of impact is it etc...

Eg with Mweb uncapped its basically full speed News, say 50% torrent, 500ms to paris based wow server, 30-50ms to local sites and well I never heard any complaints from mweb about downloads.

I state this because if south africa turns into a salt and pepper of international/local latency's then the only ISP who wont suffer at all is internet solutions as they already peer freely with Mweb.

I have an OpenWeb gold uncapped through IS and it works well! I have never had a problem.

I just read the Mweb thread, and everyone is complaining about speeds. I am sitting on a 30ms ping to Hetzner!

It's really what the majority of the xbox live users are going to use, if the majority of people use uncapped these days or IS capped accounts its no problem as mweb peers with IS.

I get 200ms to the UK with the uncapped account even though I'm shaped cause I'm in the Top 20%.

So latency won't be a problem.

If you usage is 100-150GB a month on 4096k basic unshaped account for R499 then you should be fine. Once you go above that in a month then shaping kicks in heavy. Even when shaped latency is very good. Only your downloads will suffer if you are shaped.

The cheap IS accounts are generally not that good. Look at OpenWeb Gold.

I have the Axxess 4mb uncapped. It is KAAAAAK! So bad that youtube videos do not load completely half the time, and if you try grab via download manager, most of the time the file you grab is full sized, but corrupt.
And forget about game updates. I CANNOT get Lotro to update with this sh itty account. Battled my butt off to get Rift to update when I was playing it.

When I moaned about the crap speed I was getting in January, they came back and said I was rate limited due to usage. I did 95Gb in Jan.

fwiw, these are my usage stats since I started using the account. 90% of the traffic is local IS nntp anyway, which costs them nothing basically.

I have cancelled and will be moving to Openweb Gold.

What is the diffs between the openweb lite and standard uncapped stuff?

Openweb lite is an uncapped package for someone who doesn't want to download the internet, but simply doesn't want to have to monitor their usage on a day to day basis. The account is unshaped, but if you go over the threshold, you will be throttled. Standard is much the same as when the accounts were released, fair usage policy, shaping and I think throttling kicks in, but at a later stage than on the lite package. Openweb gold is imo the best package to go for. Been with them before and had a great experience.

What is the shaping like with openweb gold? What package are you on (384,512,1MB,4MB)? Does gold have a threshold for throttling?

Soz OP for derailing your thread.

My experience with IS was really aweful. I had a 384K uncapped shaped package. I did do some downloading but less than 10Gb a month. But I was throttled so badly is the day, I got around 10kb and at night the speed was better but still only got around 25kb maxed out.

1 month later I cancelled. By my standards 10Gb on any package is very little downloading, but that was only because I was throttled so heavily. Otherwise I would have done more Gb's
