Yes, he is related to the former mayor, Gwen Ramokgopa :)

The ANC’s Gauteng provincial executive on Monday elected Sputla Ramokgopa as its candidate for Tshwane’s new mayor. Ramokgopa is expected to replace his aunt Gwen, who was appointed deputy minister of Health, when council meets to vote on Tuesday afternoon.

WHO IS SPUTLA RAMOKGOPA?

Kgosientso Sputla Ramokgopa entered politics in 2001 when he was elected as a ward councilor in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria.

He quit the post only a few years later to take up a position as an official in the Johannesburg City Council and in 2006 as the chief executive of the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market. In 2008, he was awarded the Boss of the Year award for his work at the market.

Ramokgopa holds masters degree in public administration and business leadership as well as a civil engineering degree. He returned to politics last year when elected chairman of the Tshwane region.

I hoped it was not. :(

After a dismal performance by Gwen Tshwane could have done with someone great. :(

I will take a mayor with a civil engineering degree and management experience any day. At least this dude should have an appreciation of town and regional planning which is important for service delivery and infrastructure management.

What it takes to protect all the irregular tender documents... the Gravy-Train is running full steam ahead. He was appointed Deputy Mayor last year September in anticipation for this. Cronyism at its best

:( Makes me sick. All those squatters will suffer for longer. The electricity fiasco will just carry on. The Metro Police is a scam. And seems to be the department of housing has been raping bussinesses for years now.. IT will just carry on.
And Gwen? She will have all that NHI money to party with and spend at heart’s content. And probably getting a nice back hand from her family for the gift of a cushy job. As if he will point out her failures..

Well if he has a degree in Civil Engineering he can't be a complete plank.

I'm assuming he got his degree in a legit manner.

Of course if he didn't get it in a legit way then he is a plank.

Good qualifications.

I do think he is too young for the position he holds, though.

Apart from knowledge (not sure if he has that, because his qualifications are not in the area of law or such), one would need a degree from the "university of life" for such a position. He will find himself in many situations where he needs to rely on life experience, make judgment calls based on experience, etc and at 35, he may just be too young.

I will give him a chance to prove me wrong, though :)

Good qualifications, finally someone who has the right credentials.

Wishing him all of the best!

This actually looks like a good appointment (except the aunt-nephew relationship makes me uneasy too), and his first action was to make a report on irregularities in the metro public, which his aunt wouldn't do because it apparently made her look bad.

Good attitude and track record/credentials so far. Did expect that this thread would just be moaning about nepotism though. :p
