105,000 people have paid for The Times and Sunday Times online access

This is great news. As much as a love free stuff, there are always drawbacks and one of the many drawbacks is quality.

The way everyone expects everything to be free is absurd. The only people that are being disadvantaged by this are us. The newspaper will cover this loss by cutting back on staff (therefore less quality) and by populating their newspapers with ads.

Plus, I think (this is completely speculative) that the content on those online sites will be far more reliable as they wouldn't have to lower themselves to sensationalism to try sell a extra copy (people are subscribing already).

Do they have anything like this here?

I'm the opposite... if I can get it online, why waste my time with the tele.
 
What would be intresting is the number of prior site visitors . Compare that figure to this one.

Online you have a choice of the articles you want to read. On TV you may need to wait to see the story you're actually interested in. I fail to see how TV is a better medium for news than the internet.
 
There was a lot of trouble and threats of lawsuits to prevent Google from crawling the Murdoch sites. His argument was that Google was essentially scraping and stealing his content (true if you think about it).
Traditional print newspapers are really feeling the pinch since so many people get thier news online these days and so they are looking at alternate mays to monetize the news.
 
Rule of thumb is I dont believe anything Rudolph Murdoch says, especially while he is trying to push an agenda.
 
I used to visit the UK Times website quite often. They had some good rugby articles. But since the paywall, well, now I find my news somewhere else.

There will always be free alternatives.

In that case Google should just completely de-list that, and any other site that complains. Problem sorted, right? :D

Same here. The Telegraph is still free though......

Have to agree with you on that one. Have all the information at your finger tips in a few seconds and no stupid ads and listening to the other random crap inbetween the decide news.

It doesn't work like that! In the business world, you must try and find a common ground instead of rushing into 'firing' your clients!

Google's big enough that they simply don't have to find common ground. If you don't want to play nice with them, they can effectively cause your site to vanish.
