Whoonga – South Africa’s monster drug

For those who have not heard, there is a drug that is picking up a lot of pace in the SA townships called Whoonga. This deadly concoction is made up of various things like rat poison, soap powder, and the main ingredient, Anti Retro-viral (AR-V’s), AIDS med’s. The mix is then rolled with weed and smoked. The result, anxiousness, aggression and potentially deadly stomach cramps. The drug is said to be one of the most addictive in the world and can hook the user after first time use. Users can experience withdrawal symptoms with in hours after the first hit.

The drug was first picked up in Durban but is starting to spread to other parts of the country. Users are said the have such extreme cramps after using the drug that they have been robbing AIDS patients as they leave the clinic. There are reports of children as young as 14 being found using the drug. It is sold for less than R50 and is readily available. There are reports of AIDS patients selling their med’s directly to dealers and users. There are even reports of people infecting themselves with AIDS intentionally so they can receive a free supply of the Anti-Retrovirals. The withdrawal is said to be potentially deadly and can take months of rehabilitation to recover from the addiction, if ever.

The question is how do we deal with this? Obviously the same approach used with drugs will not work. Weed is already illegal but the black market thrives on the desperation of the people of the townships. We can’t ban rat poison and we definitely cannot ban the AR-V’s. This drug is still young but seems to be growing in popularity. It’s negative impact is huge and it is impacting areas where education and awareness is already at a low and poverty is the name of the day’s meal. Drugs and specifically hard drugs can seem like the only way out i these areas and sometimes it is, in death. How would you propose SA approaches the problem? Authorities have already admitted that this is a difficult situation to solve as the AR-V’s can be the difference between life and death for so many. It seems once a new drug is concocted there is no stopping it.

The only organisation at this point that has prioritised fighting the drug is Project Whoonga. They attempt to convince the Whoonga users to under go months wheening and pain to get off the drug and in return they teach the patient a skill such as carpentry, film, sound engineering etc, but you can imagine fighting a forest fire with a bucket. The cops are aware of the problem but with so much to deal with already, this could be the next big slap to SA’s uneducated youth.

So these drugs are legal and people are abusing them?
Wow wonder what will happen with weed if it is legal?
Hell lets legalise crack and murder too while we at it.
But no, the hippies tree huggers want to live in a free society being allowed to do what they please.

Why do you never respond when met with the fact that 'where cannabis is legalized, usage did not meaningfully increase', coupled with the disaster wrought by alcohol prohibition in America?

You are perfectly entitled to your views, but don't tell us we are wrong based on your personal opinion when met with demonstrable fact.
 
If you have any pre-existing issues like anxiety or depression, it'll be a trip to hell and back. The fact that people can continue with it despite that kind of trip I would say makes it so deadly. Scary stuff this, really it is eish.

Ok, that tells me straightaway they are lying. It takes much longer than that to get physically addicted. It takes a while for the brain to grow new neurotransmitters, it's impossible for it to happen so quickly. Anyone with knowledge of physiology and neurology can tell you that. Even tobacco, which is by far the most addictive and deadliest drug on the planet, takes at least a week of constant use before you start getting withdrawal symptoms.

This sounds exactly like the kind of scare story ignoramuses like Marine1 like making up and spreading to generate fear in order to advance their agenda. Until I see some placebo controlled, randomised, double blind studies showing this supposed drug is really that addictive I call bullship.
 
I wish I had a penny for everytime I heard of Rat Poison being a main ingredient in some drug.

These are just the most generic, incredibly simple arguments that 15 year olds would throw around if they were told to do an oral about why weed should be illegal. And I hate hippies :D Can't believe you've really made up your mind based on this though. Why not look at Portugal and Holland for examples of what might happen if weed is legalised/decriminalised instead of wondering?

I mean "Hell lets legalise crack and murder too while we at it."?? I thought that kind of thinking died out in the 50's man.. really. Start with the correlation between murder + crack and weed. You might struggle. :/
