Buying a new tv later SAMSUNG or LG???

Hey guys
need some advice, i still have a 54 cm samsung non flat screen (tube) tv so i reckon its time for an upgrade, want to buy a new hd tv in the morning but i find myself torn between two models
both are full hd 32 inch and will be used for xbox gaming and films/tv

one is the sony the 32inch kdl-32ex400 (bravia)

game has a special and its going for R4699

the other is a samsung series 5

this one is going for R5000 at game with a "free" dvd player, they had it on special two weeks ago for R4699 including the dvd player.

The Bravia looks nice, really like it but only plays mpeg1 and 2, jpeg and mp3 via its usb while the samsung supports divX and mkv via usb, so it would save me having to buy a separate media player (which i was planning to do next month)

does anyone own any of these units? any feedback/advice/suggestions would be appreciated.
 
wow, how fail is that..... samsing and then i type lg instead of sony..... was looking at lg tvs at the time, plus its late so... fingers retarded.

i am actually also looking at those 2 tv's atm. i'm going to buy one mainly for gaming and the occasional movie. will keep track of this thread ;-)
 
if you take the sony, i feel you should rather take a newer model with the bravia 3 engine. the sony in the link look a bit out-dated...
 
I don't think you will see the full effect of 1080p on the 32". Perhaps go for a later model HD ready or even a bigger one?

hey, i did a bit more trawling and people that have the samsung seem to be happy, i reckon im gonna

go buy it later,the bravia is nice but the mkv/divx support out of the box on the samsung is the key thing

for me, probably going at 9.

it should be ok, not willing to spend more than R6000, have alot of full hd content (watch it on my pc

atm) so would rather go for a full hd tv.

Samsung seems to be a good deal.
 
what annoyed me when i went to Rondebosch hifi corp the other day is how badly set up these tvs are, picture quality is appalling usually.
 
Pinnacle Micro and Rectron also do these TV's. Usually at a bit of a discount to the store prices. You need account there to buy via them but in the IT world lots of folks seem to have accounts at these places.

I never shop at HiFi Corp. I don't even look at their specials flyers anymore. I once saw someone trying to return something that had an out-of-box-failure and the person assisting them was saying it needed to be sent away to be fixed etc and not replaced. I get they might have rules and regulations etc and that it could have just been one guy being difficult but that indecent turned me off them for life.

Go with the Samsung, I have a 40" FHD Samsung and a 40" FHD Sony, both cost about the same and I much prefer my Samsung it just seems more refined...
 
Panasonic Viera

I know it's not one of he options, but if you can get your hands on one - it's the best by far. panasonic viera rates as the best on most the comparative websites, plus I have one and there is no comparison. is more expensive though.

could you specify why you would prefer the sony over the samsung??? would you say the sony is better build and how is the quality of normal SD tv ??


also, is the picture quality of normal SD tv not crappier on a bigger tv??

Sure! I know for a fact that the Sony uses the high quality S-LCD panel (I know this because I can see the model number for the panel if I look through the top cooling vents).

Now, you would think that all Samsungs would also make use of these panels, but unfortunately some lower-end Samsung's make use of inferior panels, either made by AU optronics or Chi Mei optoelectronics. So with Samsung, you are playing a panel lottery; you might get lucky and get the better S-LCD panel, or be unlucky and get an inferior panel. Do a google search on the controversy of A, S, or U panels for Samsung, there is quite a bit of information about this.

It used to be easy to tell with Samsungs as they used to put this information on a sticker on the back of the TV. It would have the TV model number, a space, and then either an S, A, or U. Unfortunately they don't seem to do this anymore.

If you get the Sony, you KNOW what you are getting :)

With regards to SD broadcasting, I have an HDPVR which upscales everything to 1080i and it looks pretty good. The Bravia engine also does a very good job of cleaning up the picture quality of SD pictures.

Haha, I sound like a Sony rep, but this was decisive in my decision.

If SD/HD TV and sport are your main concerns, then you probably want to look at plasma screens, as plasma is better for displaying SD/HD TV and sport (and generally speaking, plasma is a superior image technology than LCD, but now we're talking high end plasmas). A 42" HD ready LG plasma can be had for R5999 at Game on special (but rather get the 42" Samsung at about R6500). Bear in mind they're not full HD, so if you need full HD for what ever reason (media player with 1080p files, console with 1080p games, PC @ 1920x1080 resolution, etc.) then full HD LCD will be cheaper than full HD plasma, which will probably be out of your budget (50" full HD Samsung plasma is on special for R9999 I think).

thanks for the excellent feedback ;-) i know about the panel controversy, when i bought my PC screen i was also told to look for the S model.
one more thing i want to ask you, regarding the bravia engines...looks like this model you got has the Bravia 2 engine if im not mistaken?? what is the difference between bravia 2 and 3?
