11 injured in hotel fire

Johannesburg - Eleven people were injured in a fire at the Formula One hotel in Meredale, opposite the Southgate mall on Sunday, Johannesburg emergency services said.

Four were treated for minor burns and the others for smoke inhalation, spokesperson Esther Manzini told Sapa.

The blaze started in a second floor room after 07:00, where a couple was sleeping. The pair was among the injured.

"The room was fully burnt and the hotel was evacuated. The fire was contained before it could spread to the other rooms."

The cause of the blaze was unknown, but fire safety officials were investigating the scene, on Murray Avenue.

"Nine of the injured were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and the others to Lesedi clinic."
