Nokia vs Blackberry vs HTC - general brand comparisons - my understanding of things

Hi guys getting my free upgrade, maybe you can help me decide, as I understand it here are the pro's and cons of the various brands. I will choose the specific phone later.

What do you think?

Nokia
pro's
-GPS and ovi maps, this is a real bonus as nothing else on the market comes close. Free Garmin/Tomtom style voice navigation on free maps. No continual data connection required (unlike every other brand?), just used my wifes in Italy on their crazy roads and it was awesome.
negs
- Crappy Symbian.

HTC
pro's
-this is for the kinda guys that would run linux on their home pc. Very customisable??

Blackberry
pro's
-The wave of Blackberry converts makes these phones more and more attractive.
-do a zillion things 'free' things like free text messaging, internet, free email service etc.
con's
-look like a d*ck (tho not as much as someone owning an Iphone).

any thoughts? Nokia for its navigation. Blackberry for its services.
 
Let's look at them according to their OS/Platform:

Symbian
Example handsets: Nokia S60s
Pros:
- Proven workhorse
- Has apps for most of what you need and app store works in South Africa
- Free navagation for life
Cons:
- Outdated and clunky UI
- Is hated by the majority of the US internet and thus by many developers

Android
Example Handsets: HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S, etc.
Pros:
- Is loved by most of the US internet and thus has lots of developers and thus lots of applications
- Has Google engineers sitting behind it
- Great UI and other features
Cons:
- Fragmentation is hurting its image
- Ongoing lawsuit with Oracle might hamper its future
- Is trying to be too much of a "me-too!" iOS competitor
- Can't buy pay-for apps in South Africa

iOS
Example Handsets: Apple iPhone
Pros:
- Fantastic UI
- Thousands of applications to download
- Can buy pay-for apps on app store in South Africa
- Everyone who owns one is happy with it
- Great conversation starter
Cons:
- Locked down by Apple
- Not all apps are available in SA (no angry birds :( )

BlackBerry OS
Example Handsets: RIM BlackBerries
Pros:
- Probably the best communcation integration available on a phone today
- BlackBerry Messanger
- Has the apps you need
Cons:
- UI is old and clunky
- Phones are ugly
- Locked down by RIM

My **** that is fantastic, cannot upvote you enough (well at all unfortunately).
 
Ugly BlackBerry? Have you guys actually studied the Bold 9700 and Torch? It's classy. I sit in meetings all day with executives throwing a whole range of expensive phones on the table ... and the Bold stands out to me as a very attractive - professional - device. The new Bold will be even more so. Tastes differ for sure.

I have Garmin GPS on my MTN powered Bold 9000 and it works great (as able as Nokia's maps). Amongst the three listed I will go for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 or Torch. A new Bold is on the way but we don't know when it will be availble in SA.
 
I have to agree with EttieneK but to add 1 or 2 more things onto his pros and cons

Symbian: N series or E series Nokia devices
pros - very established UI. very intuitive UI for most novice users especially those not in the USA (almost anyone has had a S40/S60 device along the way)
cons - Symbian is not a OS for touchscreen devices. It worked pretty well with non-touchscreen devices but thats all.

BBOS: RIM devices
pros - the best portrait qwertys in the business.best communications tool.
cons - boring devices

Android: HTC Desire, Droid Milestone, Samsung Galaxy S.
pros - wide variety of android devices from different OEMs (samsung htc sony errikson etc) so the world is your oyster. since 2.2 froyo its amazingly fast
cons - many argue that stock android UI is hardly polished enough to go toe to toe with iOS

Windows Phone 7: HTC HD7, Dell Venue Pro, Samsung Omnia 7
pros - minimalistic design (this may be a con for others understandably). XBL integration. great games so far.
cons - complaints of games taking 1-2minutes to launch. no scalability in terms of resolution (yet).

iOS Apple iPhone (4,3GS)
pros - very polished, high quality smooth finish to its UI. its easier to get an iPhone now that it was say 1year ago (thanks Core?)
cons - needs to be jail broken for it to be highly customizable. lack of widgets (even when jail broken)

Bada (Samsung)
pros - lightweight (easy on the battery)
cons - lightweight (only 1 application may be open at any given time)

MeeGo (N900, all future Nokia/Intel Devices)
pros - unkown
cons - unkown

i havnt done much research on MeeGo, but im sure its more than alright

Completely forgot about Win 7! Doh!

And didn't mention Bada, 'cause its still very tiny atm.
 
My Torch from MTN got free Garmap with Voice Navigation. Beats OVI maps.

My Torch is definately not ugly.

Talking about outdated/old OS? Symbian is definately on top of that list.
 
Torch? Pfft. Does it have HD Video recording? Does it have FM radio? Whatever man rather take a outdated OS anytime.
 
FM radio? For what? Digital streaming of radio stations over the net is the way to go. One can listen to US radio stations fro example (far far better than what one will get locally).

With the R60 I pay for BIS every month I do about 600MB of browsing, downloading, streaming etc.... That works out at 10c per MB.

Look, I dont really have a problem with any phone out there. I just like to mess with peoples heads. There's a lot of decent phone out there today that can do all kinds of stuff. But I've passed that stage where my primary phone is something I play with every day. I'm a business man and I work with my phone and BB does that for me. I don't need all the other stuff. Yes, everyone now and then I take my iPhone or X10 and I play around with it for fun, but that's not what cellphones are for really. Well, my opinion.

1) There are plenty offers these days where the BIS gets thrown in for free. Two 8520's in my household on such deals.
2) We're talking smartphones here so I struggle to understand your snide remark about going digital.
