If you learnt how to drive properly, it wouldn't be such an issue.

Why are they protesting, they all bought their license anyway, when it gets cancelled, they can just buy another one :P

Once a driver has 12 demerit points, his or her driver's licence gets suspended for three months. A driver's licence gets cancelled on the third suspension.

Satawu's Gauteng chairman Ephraim Mphahlele said on Saturday the union appreciated the fact that government wanted to implement the system in an attempt to minimise road accidents.

However, Mphahlele said AARTO would threaten the jobs of Satawu members by suspending and nullifying driving licenses.

"To this end, tens of thousands of Satawu members and many more workers who rely on driving licenses to eke out a living, let alone for financially supporting their respective families, are destined to be dealt a fatal blow, whenever their respective licenses are suspended or withdrawn."

The union called on the ANC, its alliance partners, the SA Communist Party, the Congress of SA Trade Unions and other organisations to join it in its campaign against the system.

The campaign would start in Gauteng and then go to other provinces.

"This will culminate in a national transport shutdown," said Mphahlele.

They can strike, I don't like the new demerit system either.

If their licenses get suspended, what difference will it make? Do you really think they will stop driving?

So basically they are saying we will break the law and then will not be able to work which is unacceptable.

What a strange country.

A fatal blow??? nowhere near as fatal as the 1000's that they massacre on the roads every year. These buggers kill more people on our roads in a year than people killed in Iraq and Afghanistan (and they call that a war?)

Bush and Blair got it wrong, the war on terror should have focussed on South African taxi's :D

Police and journalists outnumbered gathering marchers at the planned protest of minibus taxi drivers in Pretoria over the implementation of the traffic demerit system.

Pffft ! Epic fail.

I don't know where I stand on this whole new demerit system, but either way, they're protesting it because Satawu are worried their drivers will be without a job... If they obey the law they car drive forever.

Where can one see the AARTO regulations?

I would like to see if they will be able to implement this country wide or only in one are like Gauteng.
