Latest Rockchip Android tablet is 1.2GHz CPU, 1080P support with HDMI out. For around R2000 why would someone spent 400% that on something 10% better?

The waiting is killing me, i like the fact that the screen is wide screen as opposed to the 4:3 screen of the ipad. Also the size is more portable.
Hope it is as good as all the you tube reviewers are saying.

What i'm trying to get at is that at 3" larger AND $200 cheaper, the archos is valid option. If you are even the tiniest little bit android proficient you can easily get around the market thing, and have full access to all apps.

Samsung Galaxy S: Lagfix needed for moderate use... GPS not working... Not the full 512MB RAM... Apple gave free cases to fix the antenna problem, whilst we got...? Ummm.
I could actually relate to the browser problem they are talking about, the forums on XDA had to wipe up a lag fix for it as well.

Got it as an upgrade, R175/month added on my 500meg Data contract.Vodacom.
Really is a great size, very fast running the appz, screen is awesome, clear and bright, put a mkv file on, and it worked with no probs.
touch sensitivity is also great, battery life is good, i used it for about 5 hours and i was only on half usage.
**** thing now is trying to get decent accessories for it, , like a cover, and such, i also see the screen is made from the gorilla glass , so it is pretty scratch resistant.
Also it is definitely a capacitive screen.
Overall really nice piece of kit.
Connected to my wifi no problems.
The samsung Kies software, needs a little work and getting used to......the sync software.
Also it uses the epub format for the built in ereader, really looks awesome.

The Android tablets will only start flourishing with the Gingerbread update (2.3), cos 2.3 will support higher screen resolutions (rumoured).
I feel Samsung jumped the gun a leetle bit, cos everything you see on the Tab, is basically a 480X800 screen res pumped up to fit a 7'' display. It works well, but I would like a higher resolution on such a device.
kienah
23-11-2010, 02:50 PM
The screen is 1024x600 which is pretty good. it is also 16:9 rather than the 4:3 as on the iPad

sure.thing. No probs. If can do a little video review if you want too? Just tell me what you want to see?
So far. Ive been browsing for 2 hours, also been watchin a lot of high quality flash videos, and the battery is still showing 100%. Which is something i was worried about since you cant take out the battery and replace it. So in terms of battery, its world class.
I smacked a blu ray rip of blade runner. And although it doesnt look the same as watchin it on an expensive led tv, its insanely good. The contrast is just right. The ability to adjust the white and black contrast really helps here. Especially in terms of blade runner, which is generally quite a dark movie.
sound is good. As could be expected from all my previous samsung devices such as the Innov8, Galaxy S. I have not tried the headphones yet.
WiFi. Which was is a big issue with my Galaxy S, seems much improved. My Galaxy S's wireless SUCKED. this is better. Much better. Im sitting in my garden right now typing this. And im about 45m away from the AP, with fairly quick browsing. Ie. No lag. 2 seconds to open a standard page.
So wireless kicks ass on this phone. Which is totally non negotiable on a tab.
Apps. Work fine. MyBroadband app is a must. Lol and works well. Angry birds. Works well. Apparently there are some issues regarding the upscalling of apps, but i have not had that problem with the 10 or so apps i have downloaded from the Marketplace.
if there is snything else you want me to test let me know. My final thoughts are that although this is a hybrid of a mainstream tablet, and a smartphone, its flippin awesome. If you like the apple ipad, then get it. But i had one and sold it after a week. It was just to big and made it pointless as it is exactly like a netbook with no keyboard. Only downfall of the g.tab is that they dont give you a pouch.
FYI. This took me just under 4min to type.

A general video review would be great...
comparing dimensions of tab and galaxy S (mainly thickness)
comparing the screen (viewing angles) of your galaxy S and the tab
reading pdfs and office documents on the tab
Does it have the same gps fix problem the galaxy S has?
I saw a video of the tab having browser lag issues....wasn't smooth, has this been fixed?
can you use the front camera for skype calls?
not that I am planning to use it as a phone...but how is the speaker on it?

A couple of the international reviews mention lag whilst using the device along with an iffy browsing experience, is this actually the case.
How does it handle email, not going to be using it as my main device for email but will need it to send a couple whilst on the go.
IS the screen usable outdoors.

The main difference between the 2 is the OS and the "Content Provider" behind them. Who is behind the Galaxy? What content do they provide?
The second difference is the iPad is already going into a 2nd iteration, whereas the Galaxy is in a 1st iteration [in other words they are already behind] .
Basically it's EXACTLY like having to decide between a Samsung Generic E-Reader [with no specific content provider behind it] vs. Amazon Kindle . If they cost the same, why would i go for the Samsung?
The top selling factor for ANY of the Apple products these days are not the "Tech" of the device, it's the CONTENT,SUPPORT and USER EXPERIENCE [as in the chance that your favorite content will be available on the device, ease of use etc]. So the reason why i'm punting the iPad in favor of the Galaxy is simple:
1. I don't believe Android is the future for non-apple tablets [Chrome OS is ]
2. The Apple App Store [and various other content being developed for the platform]
Now if the Galaxy had Windows 7 on it and/or 30% cheaper than the ipad ....i would be singing a different tune. I believe Android tablets are "experimental" simply to get something in the market -now- [to get some part of the tablet-bubble while they can] . So from that angle i don't see why it should be the same price as the "market leader" and expect to succeed.

you make a valid point. But at the end of the day, i felt the tab because of its size and calling feature, filled a niche spot. I would never get anthing larger than my tab, as then i might as well be looking at a netbook. That said, you are completely right in implying its overpriced. But then again so is the iphone 4.

Chrome is not aimed touch screens, so that isn't really possible. Several manufacturers are committed to Android Honeycomb tablets so I disagree with you there.

The hardware in the Galaxy Tab is no less advanced than the iPad. In fact the processor is more powerful and it has twice as much RAM. Unless just being made by Apple and having their OS makes it more valuable to you there is no reason for the Galaxy Tab to be cheaper. And that screen that packs a similar resolution into an even smaller space must have higher manufacturing costs.
Personally I wouldn't buy either of them though. Maybe a reasonably priced 10-inch Android tablet when some good ones are available. It's just hard to justify it when I already have an Android smartphone.
Might get a 10 inch Archos or something just for web browsing and stuff that would benefit from a bigger screen.
Personally I'd like a tablet that doesn't unnecessarily increase its cost with stuff that I'd rather use my phone for anyway, like GPS, rear camera and cellphone antenna (as long as I can tether it to my phone via Bluetooth).

http://www.geek.com/articles/gadgets/rumored-ipad-2-launch-in-february-may-be-smaller-ipad-instead-20101214/
Dec. 14, 2010
Last week we heard rumors that Apple intends to release the iPad 2 by the end of February. That’s based on reports that Foxconn’s plant is preparing to ship hardware within the next 100 days. But while it has been assumed this is going to be an iPad 2, it may in fact be another model of iPad.
Reuters has heard from manufacturers in Asia that the new iPad expected early next year could be a smaller version of the existing iPad with a few updates.
While the details of what exactly Apple has planned for February are unclear, what is becoming apparent is the iPad is going to get some form of new model in a couple of month’s time. Whether it’s smaller, or lighter, or boasts a fantastic new display, is what remains a mystery.
Chrome is not aimed touch screens, so that isn't really possible. Several manufacturers are committed to Android Honeycomb tablets so I disagree with you there.

It's not available yet and it's just a rumour.
That does not make the Galaxy "already behind". Besides, there will be Android tablets to match it.
Well depends on where you look : http://dev.chromium.org/chromium-os/user-experience/form-factors/tablet

Interesting. Still, netbooks seem to be the main target. That's only a concept, meanwhile Android is already on Tablets and the Honeycomb version is being designed with tablets in mind, with several companies already working on a tablet. A Motorola Tablet is being used by Android developers working on Honeycomb.
Personally I just don't see much point in Chrome OS.

Personally I just don't see much point in Chrome OS.
All opinions of course, anything can happen. Either way my point was, that here we have a well established tablet with an extremely popular company behind it with alot of development occuring on the platform [and the platform+tablet has been on the market for a year] that are selling at a price point that most people consider "expensive, but it is Apple" . So the ipad [and even i admit it] is ALREADY expensive and the price can only go DOWN....
Now we get Samsung, with an open source OS , not providing any content themselves and a rather touch and go marketplace that will eventually be all over the place [similar to what happened with Linux] and they come in at the exact same price point? THAT i have a problem with. The fact that people can even go "ipad vs galaxy" after the ipad has been out for a YEAR tells me the Galaxy is not doing anything revolutionary here, they are simply "catching up" , not "taking things a step further" . I don't see why i should pay the Apple-premium for the Galaxy.
