Best prepaid SIM with talk & data for a month's visit to SA?

Hi

I'm visiting South Africa for a month and want to buy a SIM and prepaid talk-time + data for my Android.

I'll need a few hours talk time (peak and offpeak, to landline and mobile) and a couple of hundred MB data.

The post "Mobile Internet for Foreigners" is different to my case as that is for data only, but I am aware of the RICA requirements.

So any suggestions on which provider and package to go for, and any gotchas to watch out for?

I think you should use Vodacom. They do have better HSDPA coverage than MTN. Vodacom also have a facility where you can purchase the data bundle online as apposed to MTN you can only do it using a *123# thing; not sure if that bothers you.

But I think for a month, Vodacom or MTN will be fine. 1GB is R289 and 2GB is R389. I would get one of those two.

1. Get a pre-paid sim card at a Vodacom/MTN and RICA. Just make sure the SIM is enabled for data, I am sure it will be.
2. Recharge with air time
3. Register on Vodacom4me.co.za and buy bundle or *123# on phone (I cannot remember the exact number) and buy your bundle
 
Or Cell C (if your Android phone supports 900Mhz HSDPA/HSPA+). Cell C has the cheapest data rates by far (and fastest if you have coverage). Where will you be travelling? Coverage may be the only issue...

250MB - R100, 500MB - R150, 1.2GB - R250, 3GB - R400.

The Easychat allday tariff (default on prepaid) is reasonably good as well.
