Broadband Infraco officially launches

Good stuff and all.

I'd like to know who would be making use of this connectivity and what kind of savings are in store.
Or what kind of improvements will the players and it's customers be looking at.
 
Huh, 1.6 billion and nobody heard of them. Why do gravy come to mind
 
Flashy event in Sandton...laser show and the like. Waiting for the two ministers to speak...not expecting much, but maybe they make a few promises :)

These guys build their network on the old Transnet infrastruture, or not ?
 
Infraco only makes sense if more localized class licence operators make it on the scene. Basically until you have a working last mile rolling out tons of fibre just leads to the big players enjoying lower costs without any passing on to the end user.

What I really hope Infraco decides to do is to build data centres and other facilities to build SAs local internet.
 
Folks, don't get me wrong, I support ALL efforts to reduce my broadband costs.

BUT

I do not believe that Government should be operating in every single area of service provision - from the DoC to ICASA to Broadband Infraco to Telkom to MTN to Vodacom to Neotel. They should be the referee and not the playmaker.

The other option is that they nationalise the long haul links, i.e. appropriate them all from all roleplayers, and then allow full, unbridled competition in the local fibre links and local loop.

I'm confused.

Created in 2006, but only launched in 2010. And when did they build this 12000km fibre? Before the launch or is it still to be built & I'm reading the article wrong?
