No SABC funding via income tax, says ICASA

Icasa, the broadcasting regulator, told Siphiwe Nyanda, the former communications minister, in no uncertain terms, that it does not consider it viable to abolish licence fees and fund the debt-plagued SABC using personal income tax.
 
Will the SABC just die already? Why should anyone have to pay to fund a propaganda machine?
 
They should just come up with separate decoders for SABC those who want to watch it will buy them and those who don't just don't buy them and only those with these decoders should pay TV licences to fund the Luthuli House Machine
 
Photo copy last years license payment and forward it to SABC , saying this is full payment for this year and state that its a copy due to the repeats we have been subjected too. :(
 
Tax is the only way that the SABC will get money from me. Never had an SABC licence and never will have one.

And please don't come with the BS that it is "the right thing to do" or it is "the law".

I have a car, I use it on public roads, I pay a licence fee, I pay extortionate toll fees. No problem.
I have a bakkie, I use it only on the farm, I don't pay a licence fee. No problem.
I have a TV, I use it to watch DSTV, I pay the extortionate subscription. No problem.
I have a TV, I don't watch any SABC channels, I don't pay a licence fee. No problem.

I thought licensing fees only accounted for not even 11% of SABC's total revenue, the rest coming from advertising? Why is this such a big deal?

But something will be done, and we'll end up paying for it... How else is guavamint going to let the masses know they can still breed with HIV, and ensure they have votes for the future. :erm:
 
SABC channels suck!

I recently had the misfortune of having to watch SABC TV again while visiting family. It's a bloody disgrace that they are making people pay for the same old (and in many cases older) series and movies that we used to watch for free 20 years ago. The original night-rider series for example... I mean have they even checked to see how irrelevant that old junk is in this day and age?!!

And the advertising! They must be making millions out of that alone. I really don't see how they can be suffering financially if it is not due to intense corruption.

For example:
Recent reports indicate that their personnel expenditure was R990mil for the year.
Therefore their 3000 employees earn an average salary of R330 000 a year.
Quite good considering they are striking all the time...

The report also states that they received a total of R50mil from the gov in the past year when we all know they received a R1bil bailout some time after the end of November last year. And the truth is that the SABC is not struggeling, but according to the report has experienced substantial year on year revenue growth for the past several years. So if it's going better than ever then why did they receive a bailout equal to a third of their reported revenue?

Instead of abolishing license fees why not just abolish the SABC? I also refuse to pay for a TV licence and proud of it. Never have and never will.
 
Does anyone know of someone who has been prosecuted in anyway for not paying their TV license? Besides a Business that is.
 
Made the mistake and paid last year for the first time. Feel dirty and guilty and will never ever tell anybody that I payed the farkers. Will never pay again.

That was a big mistake. They will hound you for the rest of your life, even if you prove to them you don't have a tv at the moment and are therefore exempt from paying.

If you happen to buy a new tv in 10 years, you will pay the tv licence for that year, and they will send lawyers after you to get paid for the 10 years in between, EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN'T HAVE A TV DURING THAT DECADE

Paseka Maleka, Icasa's spokesperson, said the authority had not attended "because we did not receive an invitation or any communication from the department", although the department denies the claim.

A case of the soiled potty calling the kettle sooty? - both the Department of Miscommunications [DOM for short] and !CASA are infamously known for their failure to communicate with anyone.

I would certainly be surprised if there was an invite email from the merry depart-mental gang of tax money wasters, but I would be even more surprised if anyone at !CASA has bothered to read work-related emails in their inboxes since rise to power of the narcoleptic incompetent Paris Mashile, and I doubt that things will have improved since they appointed some guy in his 70s as the head honcho at !CASA.
Mtimde said apparent "drafting errors" in the Bill that appeared to compromise editorial independence, an independent broadcasting system and a vibrant community broadcasting sector. He suggested that the minister should correct these.

Reminds me of what happened to !CASA's ADSL Regulations that changed drastically from the draft version to favour Telkodemonopolies in a very unfair manner.

As soon as the ANC send their cadres to run/ruin a company, the said company turns into a hot pile of steaming ****.

There's no money left to be stolen, so they might all leave and give it to some poor bastard to try and rebuild. And if/when the poor bastard manage to turn the company around, they'll be back.

Ouch. You made a big mistake.

I sold my TV 5 years ago, phoned the SABC to tell them that I will not renewing my licence & still receive threatening letters from lawyers every year. My mother had a business TV licence years ago, today she is still trying to sort it out. She has faxed more than 20 letters to the SABC, mailed them to the SABC....and she is still trying to get it sorted.
 
ICASA's doing something right :eek: ... to consider tax was just plain ludicrous. Sanity prevails. For now.
