FNB Connect: 25c per minute global calls detailed

FNB surprised the market yesterday by launching their “call anywhere in the world for 25c per minute” special. Here are the details.

Their SIP client seems quite buggy. On Symbian at least, not sure about the other platforms.
 
I give FNB credit for always being an innovative bank, best thing they did was bringing Paypal over to SA
 
Nope sorry, I smell a rat..... This just days after we hear about the high bank charges in SA? The huge loss will drive their profits way donw should people make use of this, whihc is not as bad as it sounds, them showing less profit, yet running at this loss on purpose when they dont need to or have to, there is something wrong with this picture...

I don't think that FNB are among the culprits of high bank charges - that would be SB and Absa. They're no saints, but nowhere near as bad as those two.

I agree. I did my homework and FNB is the cheapest in terms of bank charges. Go and compare!
 
I found out something cool, the Connect Phone application automatically connected to an Always ON Wi-Fi hotspot, and I was able to make calls.

Best of all I was not charged for the data of the call, way cool :)

When I logon to the application, it automatically connects to the Wi-Fi hotspot.

Call quality was pretty good.

Well I called my dad in Korea twice and cost me R3 for the calls, so I really can't complain. If their service reverts back to the old pricing, then I will just stop using it...

I think as consumers we should exercise our right of choice...

there original pricing is still not expensive so u might as well continue with the usage
 
I've been using FNB Connect now for almost 10 months and have not had any issues regarding the bandwidth side of things. Facebook and twitter at night is free, which is an added bonus if the family uses it a lot, haven't tried the voice side, but their product has been stable for most of the time since its launch, and I am proud to be an FNB client, i've been with them now for 2 years and their banking charges are by far the cheapest. Think i'll give the voip a try this afternoon

Infact, FNB and Capitec are almost exactly the same - if you match apples with apples. Obviously FNB have a lot more types of accounts to offer, but for the same services and benefits, they're almost identical.
 
Does FNB Connect still have that long (30 seconds) connection delay when calling cellphones?

I used them with a SIP ATA a while ago but when dialing MTN/Cell C numbers it would say "Please wait while we connect you" over and over for 30 seconds before the call starts ringing.

That might not sound like a long time, but compared to the relatively instant connection time when dialing from a cellphone/landline it becomes hugely annoying when you're in a rush!
