Vodacom's block of controversial website welcomed by FPB

I just went to that site, I don't get it.

Since when are service providers in the business of censoring the internet? **** that.
 
all that is going to happen is that the kids seeking the Jules material will transfer it to each other by cellphone where it has been recorded in the first place, so VCs bottom line doesn't suffer. Although I doubt we'll see them put a stop to WASP porn because thats a cash cow.

SA ISPs should not be allowed to block sites unless requested to by the customer (so they can bring out more family safe products which customers choose to be on) or ordered to be the court unless the blocking is a result of real network stability issues. The FPB should have to seek an ex parte nisi High Court Order authorizing all ISPs on whom the Order is served to implement restriction measures or to show cause why they can not. One little (mentality not size of operations) company making the decision is dangerous - just now Vodacom wants more brownie points and blocks sites related to opposition parties.
 
Some much for freedom of expression :) Surely people should get to decide if want to view the site or not?

I work in a school that is mentioned on OuToilet. Believe me when I say, the content on that site is rof I have long listened to kids swear and mangle the language here in Cape Town, but that site is something else. The way the guys talk about the girls is beyond disgusting. The girls are guilty of some terrible bitch fights as well, especially interschool. For all that people scream about Mxit, it is nothing compared to OuToilet. I'm all for freedom of expression and so on, but that site is nothing more than slander and filth. For us who are long out of high school, it's not much, but for kids who have to face each other daily, it causes major issues.

The problem here is not the content of the site, but the precedent set by Vodacom's action. Do people honestly not see this?

No doubt, but that's beside the point, it is neither Vodacom's mandate nor right to censor the internet.

I see it, don't you worry. What really irks me, is that the sort of people who support this kind of censorship are no doubt the same sort of people who write angry letters to Woolworths at the slightest hint of anything that they perceive to be censoring their own views.
 
Vodacom does however have a right to seek permision to monitor certain traffic - such as that traffic involving that site and to identify which Vodacom devices are uploading and downloading illegal material to the site

Isn't this the purpose of RICA, the reason I need to find my bloody ID book to sign up for the any ISP or cellular account. The interception of communication is supposed to be regulated in a proper fashion. VC is simply pretending to do something that would only serve their interests - quite frankly the decreasing use of an internet site will just increase the use of more direct means to move the content: mms for example costs more than data.

Have I missed something, again? This site is hardly any different to pretty much any peperonity WAP site. Had a look, the parts I did understand were pretty tame. I mean, for the people who aren't looking to hook-up, its like a Gossip Girl vibe? Seems a bit ridiculous to suggest this rips the moral fibre of our country. What about 4Chan? And Facebook Groups? And Mxit itself? This is dumb, Vodacom is dumb. Why put everything on the line to censor a site that has thousands of similar competitors? And for something so lame!

RICA and the interception of comunications are two different things. RICA is needed for the interception of comunication but they are not the same thing.

So does many of the sites I regularly visit. The point is I specifically choose to navigate there so I agree with the sentiment .. since when does a service provider have the right to censor anything on the net? People, our rights to free speech & freedom of expression is under fire & not from lawmakers or the police as one would expect but from lowly service providers. Get your grubby little fingers out of our net Vodacom!!!!
 
Nice one Vodacom, what next...block your competitors sites, and why stop at that ....kill access to news sites as well....- seriously, do you think by stop access, you going to change behavior...?? - in the words of a three year old, EPIC FAIL!

What has happened to right of freedom to express who you are & what you look at. Oh I forgot we are living in an Arabic state!

If they really wanted to be proactive about it they could have sent out communication to their clients & asked the clients to give them feedback on whether they wanna see that site. Then people would have to agree to it & it would be their choice.
