Please define "not functional". What EXACTLY do they do?

the modem goes dead, the i just go into device manager and re-enable it.

also sometimes the device stops functioning properly (yellow exclamation mark...)

and the dsl icon changes colors like a mothaf%$#er and the line is fine

Sounds like a dodgy USB port. You using the same USB cable on all of them? And have u tried on different USB ports?

It sounds unlikely to me that this happens with a few different pcs with a few different modems. This leaves the line and the ISP. I seriously doubt that the ISP can disable your modem. This leaves the phone line...im not 100% sure but i suppose spikes could let the modem switch off. Have you got one of those POTS filter thinga majigs on there?

if a usb device draws over 500ma then windows will disable the port. Many adsl modem teeter on the 500ma line, and occasionally cross it...See if you can use ethernet instead, or BUY a powered usb hub, or a usb2 pci card (not too expensive) and use that to connect the modem to. You may have tried 13 usb ports, but it will still be the same controller...and if it is a sis usb chipset then you can expect the trouble you are experiencing as they are the most likely chipsets to disagree with usb adsl modems.

I had a similar problem with a USB 56k modem, it was the modem ( cheapy ), a well known Chip inside, but something about the modem would mean that it would not always do what it was supposed to .. the only way to get it to work was to remove wait a while and then add it again ...
It also ( as an extra bonus ) would reboot my PC for me at random moments during my connection.

it doesnt always act funky, but if ive been away for a while then it sometimes acts up!!!

its just irritatin bcos other people i try and explain to that ask for advice cant understand that it isnt the line!!!

they say that if something has been workin perfectly all the time and then suddenly the modem is dead - then it cant be their fault!!!

all i do is then go into device manager and enable it....

i have a pci usb2 4 port card also in my pc , but havnt tried da modem in there yet....

it will go steady for a decent period of time but then 1 day it will start its $hit

also is it remotely possible to have a permanent connection with 1 of these modems???

thanks u guys - much appreciated
