So here I am, I need to urgently download a file using HTTP, and I get a speed of 40KB/s, on a 4 mb line using a 4mb account. This is a legit file, nothing dodgy!

Then to add insult to the wound, I had to download another HTTP file via a VPN (something quickly for work) and blow me MWEB throttles it to 8B/S (8 bytes)

So can someone please tell me, why am I paying for a 4mb line with a 4mb account when it would be quicker for me to use 14kbps modem?
 
so linoman any chance of a tracert ? i can quite assure you that file is not shaped as i managed to pull it at around 70Kb/s even with steam taking most of my bandwidth.

i would then guess that local to you is fine on HTTP/FTP. it must be then USA (or INT) to you that's the problem. wonder how a speed test to New York for example would be. (www.speedtest.net) did you try that file again in the OP ?
 
I get max speed all the time... Sometimes, the breakout links go poo poo, and I get really bad speeds. Even browsing feels sluggish.

Otherwise, it could always be the server you're dloading from... their traffic might be limited or their infrastructure might be dodge.

Try use a proper Download Manager too. I used to use FDM (Free Download Manager) and used to start at 420 but slow down to 250kb/s after 10 mins or so.
I moved to IDM (Internet Download Manager) and get 420 consistently with MWEB UNCAPPED and higher with my other accounts.
Even files from FileServe or HotFile come down at the proper speed when using the free option... using FF's dload manager, I'd get 5kb/s, but with IDM I get 120kb/s.

I'm very happy with MWEB's uncapped... even playing games on PSN (which I thought would suffer after the peering story) is 100%. Played NFS HP online the other night and it appeared to be latency free. Racing games are notorious for exposing lag.

You do have to pay for it.

But I've never regretted switching over, it effectively doubled my FTP and HTTP average download speed as well as getting the maximun available speed out of file hosting servers.

For example:
If there's a 350MB file on HotFile that I'm looking to download.
I don't have a Hotfile account, nor do I use their services enough to warrant one.

If you choose the "Regular, Slower Download" option, the estimated time is 20 minutes. (free is 2 minutes or something)
Before, I'd get speeds of 5kb/s. I always thought that this was what "The Slower Option" was all about.
IDM integrates into your browser and you can set it to automatically kick in with files larger than a certain amount. (I've chosen 1MB)
Now, I get 100kb/s a from Hotfile and IT DOES TAKE 20 MINUTES, not 3 days anymore.

there's a tab which appears over imbedded vids that gives you the option to dload with IDM. very useful if you've been sent a link with a vid you'd like to see but don't want to wait for the blooming thing to buffer. BAM! you dload it at max HTTP speeds! and can watch it at your leisure.

Never looked back.

I always thought it was my line or my ISP that was holding my 4mbit (now 6mbit) line back... meanwhile, it was my download manager.

I think you have been moaning about this for sometime now so i think you need to ask yourself, why am i still using this service?

Why are you paying for a service that is not delivering?
