Why are people reluctant or unwilling not to reveal their income or wealth on MyBB?

So about a year ago I started a thread asking people's salary/income and how they spend their income. I asked that question because of curiosity to find out how South Africans generally spend their money, what they spend it on and how much they save.

So since we do not reveal our real identities on this website, some of us don't even reveal which part of the country we are from, there shouldn't be a reason to not willing to reveal personal info?

My question is, is there a risk in revealing personal info such as income/salary? Personal info like where you live, where you work and stuff like that i can understand why one wouldn't want to give out those personal info.

Well I do reveal my identity on all the forums (my surname is rather unique) and my presence on many forums is known by my bosses and/or other staff. I strongly disagree in mentioning ones salary as each persons situation is different.

Revealing my income to others in the office will create issues, some will be upset that I earn more than them, others will be surprised that I earn way less than them. At least I'm mature enough to understand the reason for salary discrepancies and it does not bother me.

why dont you start op? set the example and perhaps others will follow suite

You'd be surprised. Someone recently linked my real identity & this username from +- zero clues thanks to Googles near instant site crawling:

I asked the forum something via a new thread. Then I asked the person the same thing IRL. That person typed it into Google, clicked on "pages from south africa" and bam Result #1 is me. Question phrasing was similar enough to make it a certain match. Didn't see that one coming....:wtf::erm:

What McD said,

... You would be surprised who, from what companies people post here. Don't try get them to expose themselves coz they won't.

I personally have met about 6 people from here in the last 4/5 months. I really don't wanna know what they earn...

Salaries, Spending habits are PERSONAL INFORMATION. Now lets investigate what is PERSONAL INFORMATION.

PERSONAL INFORMATION is MY FREAKING BUSINESS :p

I don't see how YOU or anyone else will benefit from knowing what my salary is or what I spend it on and If you or anyone can benefit from it? Why would I want YOU or ANYONE else to benefit from it anyway :D

Just ito salaries, why don't you start an anonymous survey where each person says how much they earn, their qualification, their years of experience, and which industry they are in. People may prefer that kind of anonymity rather than the pseudo-anonymity a nick provides...

Why? What's it to you?

Its considered a taboo to discuss your salary with others within your company... otherwise it has got nothing to do with anybody!

hmmm more than just being taboo ... i suppose most ppl think it rather personal, some things u just dont broadcast right!

My previous company actually had a part in the employment contract that you aren't allowed to disclose your salary to anyone within the company. I have enough posts on here that you could probably figure out my identity. I'm not *that* secretive about it though.

why is this in the motoring section?

and i honestly dont care if ppl know what i earn, it has varied so much over the past two years that the answer i give u now will prob be different (for better or worse) in 3 months time
