Acoustice Research or Jamo entry level with pioneer VSX 920

Looking to get somthing decent as im not rolling in millions this package seems to be round the 10k mark wich is alot of money for me. I have not listened to either yet which i will defnitely do before purchasing. Any Audiophiles around to give some advice or pointers to a decent entry level system? Must look classy as well, the sony systems out there are butt ugly but then again its all taste I prefer wood with a cloth cover. All advice will be greatly appreciated!
 
I'll be going the Jamo + Pioneer route shortly, but you won't be disappointed with either package.
 
Wich jamo speakers if I may ask i found these http://www.dionwired.co.za/JAMO-Speaker-System-Black-S416HCSSUB-200-484025.aspx and got really excited. They look frikken AWESOME, but if you google images for that model no it comes up with these http://www.dionwired.co.za/JAMO-Speaker-System-Dark-Apple-S416HCSSUB200-510142.aspx, So i will take a trip to umhlanga tomorrow to see what they actually look like. And hopefully not get disapointed. Some history I did fine out

a: Acoustic Research used to make baging (American) product but then they sold off parts of the company to china, I guess the speaker division was part of the sale cause googling the model no's ar 900 and ar 3000 dosnt yeild much fruit. So I'm sceptical.

b: On the AVS.co.za forum I think i found a guy saying the entry level jamo's distort quiet badly.

I guess I just got to go in and have a listen.
 
Oi I'm thinking of the same set! :D In terms of distortion, I don't think they'd be any worse than those Sony HT systems. It all depends on how you set up your system and what you'll be pushing it to. Living in a complex, it would be just fine for my needs.

I get a sinking feeling the speaker's are not what we are expecting....... But yes what a awesome looking combination :D

I have also been looking around for an AVR / Speaker package, and I was looking at the AR and Jamo speakers at first.

I have decided to take the Denon AVR 1911 AV Receiver.

The Jamo speakers look nice, but I have also heard that they distort... Also, the ones I was looking at at Dion Wired, was 90Watt rated.

The AR speaker set was just plain ugly.

So, I shopped around a bit and found the speakers I really wanted, Missions! They are selling at Audio Vision and Tafelberg Meubels for R6999, a bargain if you ask me! The kit consists of the following:

- Mission MV8 Front Floorstanding Seakers
- Mission MVC Center
- The Rear speakers look like this, but are not as deep, so they can be wall-mounted
- Mission MS8 Subwoofer

All that for R6999 is a steal! Even from a rip-off store like Audio Vision!

I was just at Audio Vision looking at that set of Mission speakers and the bottom woofer in the floor standers doesn't do anything. Basically it has no magnet and is only there for show.

Be careful if you're considering buying them, check them out and listen to them, also ask the salesman questions.

WHAT?? Seriously??? I'm gonna kill some salesperson....

I looked at the Mission specs though, and the MV8s are as below:

Drivers: - LF/MF: 2 x Mission 'Pyramid' aramid polymer fibre/paper pulp woofer
- HF: Viscous laminated dome tweeter
- Inverted driver geometry for time alignment and Neodymium magnets

So I wonder how this works???

Apparently the model number on the fronts is different so I would check it first.

You know, for the last month I have been set on getting these speakers, and now I am unsure again....:cry:

So, I have about R7k I am willing to spend on speakers, what do I get now????

Have even thought about getting a decent set of fronts and a center, and then expanding later... maybe getting some nice KEF or Polks? Any ideas guys???

That's definitely the best way to go, if you don't mind waiting until you save up for the others. I'd recommend Polk Audio because I experience them first hand every time I head over to my bro in law's place :)
 
Check Audio Vision out, they have an awesome set of Boston bookshelves for R3000 whick leaves 4K for a centre and a sub which could be do-able. You can then save for better fronts and move the Boston to the rear.

Whatcha think?
 
I was thinking of something like this... but almost the other way :)

I can easily buy a DECENT set of floorstanding fronts now, then get the center and sub later. They'll be easier to buy separately in the future as they're cheaper. Then I can borrow my Dad's unused Wharfedale bookshelfs for the moment...
 
Don't leave it too long between purchases : the models, drivers etc will change and you won't be able to get matching :/
 
Yep, I'll try and get a "new" model of whichever speakers I'll buy, then I will get the rest in the next 3-4 months... It's my birthday in Feb too!!!

So I went to Audio Vision and Tafelberg again yesterday, and the Missions are definitely the MV8s and both speakers work... so not sure who told you the one speaker doesn't work.... :wtf:

Anyhoo, I have lost interest in the Mission MV set in any case, they're actually ugly. So now I want to buy some separate fronts and rears, and was looking at a few more options:

Mission MX 4 (Can get them for +- R5500 from Tafelberg)
KEF iQ 7 (R7000 Audio Vision)

So really, I would like to get the IQ7s, if I can find them cheaper somewhere else. Audio Vision is never willing to budge with their prices, so I would like to find another Cape Town based KEF dealer.

So my budget is R7k about... was going to buy the mission mv8 5.1 system, now planning on getting the Mission MX4 with MXC2 center, or the iQ7's alone...

HELP!!!!!!
