Can a screen just crack on it's own? Yes it can!

I read this thread regarding the Galaxy S, and was just wondering if anyone else experienced a screen cracking without dropping or bumping the phone against anything?

The weirdest thing happend to my phone. I recently got a LG Optimus GT540 Android phone (touchscreen). Yesterday, I left my phone to charge on the table. Before disconnecting the phone, I switched on the screen to check if it's fully charged, and the screen was perfect. I put it in my pocket, and walked outside into the garden and I'm absolutely certain that I didn't drop or bump the phone against anything. I had no keys or anything else in my pocket except a handkerchief. A few minutes later, I had to make a call, and lo and behold, the LCD had a small crack towards the bottom and a thick black band running across the screen.

So, the screen is f****d and Cell C probably won't fix it under warranty ( I didn't get a chance to go to the store yet, but I know what they're going to say). However, if I get nowhere with Cell C, I'm going to take it up with LG, because clearly there is a fault with the phone. It is well looked after, and hasn't been mishandled in any way.

Was the phone hot from the battery that was just charged? or perhaps expanding battery?

I agree - doubtful if cellc will replace your phone under warranty

Seems to happen occasionally with these glass touchscreens, often right after charging. I'm sure heat is part of the problem.

Sounds to me like expansion and contraction due to temperature changes.

I suspect that too.

1. It is possible for the LCD glass to have a flaw or slight crack and heat/cold or vibration can cause it to crack fully much like a car windscreen!

2. Being a touch screen makes no difference! Such phones have a normal LCD with a "digitizer" overlaying the screen, if anything this adds a small margin of protection!

3. Not sure why you're going to take it up with LG - The Galaxy S is made by Samsung!

4. All large screen displays are more vulnerable touch screen or not!

5. The de-facto trade rule on LCD screens are if it's not smashed/cracked replacement is free, if you have cracked glass you pay!

6. I don't have the LCD/Digitizer price to hand but at a guess it would be around R650 trade - Not on SA trade price lists yet so you'd pay full manufactures price at present or worse the network price. A certain network charged a guy R1500 to for a LCD into his N97 and the trade price for a original Nokia display is R520 so he got milked for R1000!!
