From AFP:

An investigation is underway into the origins of an e-mail depicting a fake R500 bank note design, the South African Reserve Bank said on Thursday.

“There is an e-mail going around that the SA Reserve Bank is about to introduce a big [R500] note… We are not planning a R500 note,” said currency management head Mzimkhulu Twala.

“We do not know whether the person is just out to create fun and send a hoax e-mail… I think someone is doing a design and showing off their skills.”

He said the design was actually illegal because it bore the name of the SA Reserve Bank and Governor Tito Mboweni’s signature.

The design therefore could be misleading because it bore a resemblance to the bank’s family of five bank notes, of which the highest is R200.

Twala said an investigation was underway into the origin of the e-mail, in which the note depicted bears the logo of “Southern Designer.”

Twala said people might try and print the note from the e-mail, and so the public should be aware there was no legitimate R500 note in circulation.

“The public is encouraged to take note of the security features on the South African bank notes,” said the bank’s spokeswoman Samantha Henkeman.
