I’ve been using Facebook since the beginning of April. It’s a tool to connect to friends in different countries, but we’ve also been using it increasingly at work to organise our existing networks.
Now my account has been terminated. Again. Irrevocably.
Two weeks ago I started getting warnings that I was ‘misusing certain features’ on the site, and that it was potentially annoying to other users.
Last week my account was disabled the first time, and after discussions with a Customer Support Representative it was reinstated. I asked what my offense was, and he said I had too many notes. I imported my Flickr, Twitter and blog feeds. After the first warning I slowed down by cutting out my Twitter feed.
I asked what the note limit is, and received this answer:
‘Unfortunately, for technical and security reasons, we cannot provide a specific or general number of notes that can be posted before your account is warned or disabled.’
This week I had the same warnings, and on Wednesday my account was again disabled. Later on the same day I received an email stating:
‘You have already been given a second chance when we reactivated your account on 06-13-07. You received numerous warnings to slow down. Failure to adhere to those warnings has resulted in the permanent loss of your account. We will not be able to reactivate your account for any reason. This decision is final.
Thank you for understanding,’
I have emailed Facebook again, almost begging to have my account re-activated. Because I work in new media, a lot of my contacts and work messages were on Facebook.
As an example, all my contributions to work discussions have now been lost. My name have been removed from events I would have attended. I just don’t exist anymore.
To a lot of my friends and colleagues I have ceased to exist. Friends and family back home in South Africa have no idea what happened to me, as I just dropped off the network.
It’s eerie to be banished from my community. More so because it seems to be for reasons I don’t understand and find unfair.
