Yesterday I went to a presentation on Generation Y at the University of Pretoria. A lucky invitation by a friend got me a seat in the auditorium and I watched a presentation on the characteristics of Generation Y and what makes them different from my generation, which is Generation X. I found that I identified with a lot of the things that Generation Y does including staying in touch with friends even on the go with my mobile phone although perhaps not to the extent which these young people born between 1983 and 1997 do on platforms like Mxit and so forth. I do IRC on my phone, but that is perhaps just a geek thing and has nothing to do with Generation Y.
There are overlaps though and there seems to be some crossover between the generations in my view. The identification of the different generations are thourough enough though, not to allow a simple discounting of the facts. We are influenced by our times and our peers and it is always good to know where we fit into the picture.
Maybe you are a BabyBoomer and are perhaps single handedly responsible for most of the crap we as a society have to deal with when it comes to riotous young people. They are always revolting in Generation Y’s camp.
I am a Generation Xer and the older fogies in my group (born between 1965 and 1982) are also responsible for a portion of the Generation Y’s being such absolute anarchists. Okay, I am joking, Generation Y is pretty okay. They will never be Generation X but they are okay. They are changing our society in ways that I have hoped would happen for some time. They are chucking things like office hours out the window. They are giving educational institutions a healthier respect for talent and they are making their corporate bosses grovel at their knees.
Maybe, just maybe us other Generations can steal some of that confidence!
Get to know your Generation and other ones too. Get to know how to interact with them. Especially if you are in business and work with differing Generations you will HAVE to get to know them and how to work with them seeing as one organization can have three different Generations making up the fabric of that organization. Explosive stuff!
In short the research will blow you away.
