If you run a business or perhaps as an individual signed up for a free fax to email service you may not be aware of the limitations to the service. Well technically I am not referring to the quality or image handling limitations but rather to the cost impact on people sending faxes to you and the reliability of the fax service.
Many people do not know that these services make money by charging more than a normal call to handle the fax on the sender side. The call fee for a sender sending a fax to a fax to email service can be in the order of R10 per fax. Not at all acceptable if this is to accommodate granny’s recipes from time to time. If this is for business purposes you may actually run into businesses and customers who will be unwilling to send faxes to the 086 service number allocated to you due to the cost impact.
A big issue with free fax to email services is the fact that numbers are on a very high rotation. Some fax to email service providers (if not most) have a policy to pull numbers that do not receive at least one fax per month and re-issue them to a different customer. That means, if you printed that fax number onto your business cards and sent them to customers via other forms of communication you may find that somebody else is receiving your faxes. This could be potentially embarrassing.
So, check out the terms of your free fax to email service and make sure you know what the possible complications could be to you or your business.
