Apple has announced that as of Sunday, June 21 it sold one million iPhone 3GS models.
Just three days after its launch the manufacturer revealed that global sales of the enhanced iPhone are strong. In addition more than 6 million users have downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 OS software in the first five days after its release.
“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO who is set to return to work soon after undergoing a liver transplant two months ago. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”
The iPhone 3GS, which was announced at the WWDC conference in the US on June 8, is “twice as fast” as the previous iPhone 3G model according to Apple. It features better battery life, 3 megapixel camera, video recording, hands free control as well as MMS, cut, copy past and landscape keyboard functionalities.
All of these features are improvements on factors that iPhone users felt were lacking from the phone in previous models.
In addition Apple also announced that the 3GS would be available in 16GB and 32GB versions for a lower price of $199 and $299 respectively.
In January Apple announced that it had sold 13.7 million iPhones globally in 2008. It can be argued that the company will see this number grow in 2009 due to the release of the 3GS and its announcement that the iPhone3G 8GB would sell for $99.
This model is not available in SA yet but Vodacom has announced that it will be released in July although pricing details are still unconfirmed.
