Relaxing at home, laptop open on the dining room table, surfing the web via your N70’s built in 3G is fun. Let’s face it, being part of the online community and being friends with people who practically live online necessitates some sacrifice of reality and requires some head first diving into virtual reality. Skype, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk and the whole host of related IM tools are buzzing to the tune of a zillion ones and zeros flying through the windows, across the road, over the corner café’s roof, plenty of other homes up a small hill and finally crashing against the cell phone tower’s receiver and back again.
Being a geek means tinkering with all kinds of gadgets. This particular place is my girlfriend’s place and I have had to bring some of my digital wonderland into her home to make it more comfortable for myself. Unfortunately my DSL line is at my place, which means I have to use my 3G connection. It isn’t the speed that makes it unfortunate though. It is the pricey after effect of going out of bundle. 250MB bandwidth flies upsettingly quickly when you are having online debates and update websites all the time. Don’t even mention visiting photos and blogs, my new vice on MyADSL!
Take today for instance. I took it easy today because I am on my end of the month Salty Crack already and racked up a generally unimpressive 12MB traffic today. Okay, she rented some cool movies, which saved me a little. Seeing as my 250MB bundle bit the dust more than a week ago I am on out of bundle rates now and 12 times 2 equals 24. R24! The day is not out ladies and gentlemen. Not by a long shot! It’s been going like this since the bundle choked…
Day in and day out! Yesterday it was about R80. The day before that it was R200!
Being digitally connected and on the move means one thing. You will have a special understanding of what it means when folks speak of “die wet van Transvaal”…
