When one looks at the South African telecom sector today it may look healthier than a decade or so ago but the reality is that it is slow moving, bogged down in bureaucracy and lacking in competition. The South African telecom sector can learn a thing or two from our ancient forerunners. Our coastal forerunners we recently discovered were literally at the cutting edge of the global technology race whereas today we are a follower of nations and especially in the telecom sector so far behind the rest it’s actually ridiculous.
There is recent evidence that the Stone Age coast dwelling people of South Africa beat the world to the punch with the first workshop where heat was used to create tools. The coastal diggings by archaeologists revealed tools that were heated and then tweaked for use over 70 000 years ago. Some indications are there, that it may actually go back over 160 000 years. Europeans have been believed to be the first heat freaks but their evidence only goes back 25 000 years.
Imagine what would have been the reality today if they had the equivalent of ICASA in the stone heating business so many thousands of years ago! Imagine they had the Independent Stone Heating Authority of Southern Africa. ISHASA. With this Department of Stone Heating endorsed organisation you would have to apply for the right to heat stones at ISHASA. I can only imagine how much grunting would have had to go on to make things move. Once you had your ISHASA approved heating place you had to pay for a license to heat certain size stones. If you heated stones outside the size range allocated to you, your wood and other burning material would be confiscated.
ISHASA would also make it its business to make sure there are not too many Stone Heaters in business because you don’t want an oversupply of heated and shaped stones going around now do you?!!? How would the ISHASA approved Stone Heaters be able to garner bigger caves and easier to club women if everybody was in the business of Stone Heating? They would dread such things becoming commonplace and easy to do!
Lucky for us our forerunners did not have any silly and irrational regulatory constraints on their technological development path back then. These Stone Age tool making revelations made news worldwide today after being published in the journal SCIENCE last week.
