Want to use an iPhone in South Africa?
The infamous DVD Jon, who cracked the DVD encryption key eight years ago, has released software on his blog that bypasses the iPhone’s activation procedure.
To enable the iPhone to work at all users are forced to activate the unit using an AT&T SIM card. Before activation the iPhone is just ‘an expensive brick‘ as some people have said.
There has been speculation that you might be able to use a single SIM to activate more than one iPhone, but this would still force you to be in the United States.
Now it’s possble to use the iPhone in South Africa.
Get someone to buy it for you in the States, download our friend DVD Jon’s software (and Microsoft .Net 2.0), and you can bypass the compulsory AT&T activation procedure. In effect you can then use the iPhone on wifi networks in South Africa, and you’ll also have the best iPod on the planet.
I haven’t tested this – don’t have an iPhone – but according to the comments on his blog it is successful.
