I see Internet Solutions has gone the route of threatening users who use bit-torrent to get pirated software, music, videos and what not with disconnection. No matter how honorable it may seem, it is a bit beyond their scope of service in my opinion and comparable to the road toll companies wanting to check your vehicle every time you pass through a toll gate. The simple sum of all things is that it is none of their business what you do with your internet connection! What are they doing snooping us?
True they have some concerns regarding service levels with leeching putting a heavy weight on their operations, but that weight is paid for by those very customers they snoop and now threaten with disconnection. This kind of behavior from a company gets me so upset I would urge everybody on an IS connection to leech a Linux distro or some other useful open source software just for kicks off www.piratebay.org to peeve off Internet Solutions.
The second thing that came to my attention was the recent increase in the number of local artists getting listed on torrent servers for download. If I was a local artist, especially the Afrikaans guys, I would throw an “I made the pirate list” party for it is a bloomin’ honor to make that list. Think of the exposure and of course the number of people having to leech that wanted content to keep the torrent alive and kicking. I have no worries at all about that trend translating into sales.
I myself have leeched Die Heuwels Fantasties recently before going out and buying the album. The same goes for Bok van Blerk’s Afrikaner Hart album and the new Kurt Darren album. I am not at all ashamed to say that torrents serve as good quality control. It is like pre-listening a CD at the music shop. Sure some folks won’t do the same and I am not going to be all holy and say I do it for everything I download, because I don’t, but the reality is, chances are if you don’t buy, you probably wouldn’t have even if you didn’t download.
Okay there goes my rant for the day. Congrats to the local artists who made the pirated list. Go boys and girls, if you had any understanding of how these things work, you really would go and have a party or couple of drinks at least because it is an honor!
