According to a study completed by psychologist Matthew Bambling from the Queensland University of Technology matches made online tend to be brief.
The reason for this is that people tend to form an emotional attachment before meeting face-to-face making the likelihood of selecting an unsuitable life partner higher.
“There’s definitely a dis-inhibition affect online,” Bambling said in a Reuters’ article, with people more likely to exaggerate their good points while hiding anything negative.
Understandably people looking for a partner tend to emphasize their good points: “Few guys for example would say ‘look, I’m a middle aged alcoholic who’s been married five times, pick me’. They’re going to present themselves as a good catch.”
The most vulnerable group is women who, according to Bambling, tend to be more susceptible to witty comments or clever emails.
