The University of Portsmouth is developing AI software which will enable CCTV cameras to identify certain sounds like a car window being smashed.
Currently the existing software is able to identify minor visual cues like whether a car aerial is up or more complex activity like violent behaviour reported the BBC.
The team of researchers at Portsmouth has said that the next stage in their research is to enable CCTV cameras to pivot when a certain sound is recognized.
The camera will learn to ‘read’ the sound. What this means is that it will look for the shape of the sound in the same way that a human can trace the physical shape of an object when their eyes are closed.
“The longer artificial intelligence is in the software the more it learns,” said Dr David Brown, from the University of Portsmouth. “Later versions will get cleverer as time goes on, perhaps eventually being able to identify specific words being said or violent sounds.”
