Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 will be coming to SA

cheaper than an X10-mini. What's it missing?
 
There is already an "affordable" SE Android phone - The X10 mini. This is just silly. Personally I hope SE dies a slow death because of their "**** the customer" attitude.

I Love my (real) X10 but I hate their smug attitude about taking a year longer than anyone else to release updates (and locking the bootloader so tight no-one else can update it either) If I wanted to be dicked around I'd have bought an Apple product.

AFAIK most Android phones have to be rooted 1st if you want to install your own updates. And then you must put on a custom ROM. Pretty sure that's not unique to SE. *shrug*
Anyway, if you don't like it, don't buy it, but since they're the only phone company which seems to realise that some people actually like SMALL phones, I'm hoping they keep going strong.

Nope, rooting just means you have superuser access, and it's done AFTER you already have a working operating system on. It's in a way like having an administrator account in Windows rather than a normal user account. The problem with the X10 is that the bootloader is locked, you can't install a custom ROM to begin with. Yes the htc's, Samsungs etc were also locked but they were cracked relatively quickly by people like the XDA devs. Sony Ericsson spent more time locking the damn thing down than developing their updates, which is why we only just got 2.1 while the rest of the world is moving on to 2.3. (And the jump from 1.6 to 2.1 is pretty huge in terms of functionality).

edit: Yes some people are willing to sacrifice performance for smaller size, but again, the X10 mini is already quite a bit smaller than the X8 so I don't know what they're trying to accomplish. Also, SE are the only company that knows people want good looking phones and the X10 is one sexy beast. The mini is not that bad looking but the X8 is fugly.

I managed to root my X10 mini quite easily. Didn't really struggle to find info online... Maybe it's more difficult with the non-mini.

Edit: Oh wait, are u saying after rooting it's still difficult to install a custom rom? Ok, now I get your point.

No, I'm saying the two have nothing to do with each other. Root was available long ago, but installing non-official ROMs is not. Seems like there's a lot of confusion here. Flashing the ROM happens when the phone is "off", so it hasnt got anything to do with wether you have root access or not. You can choose to root the default ROM, or not, and after you have installed a custom ROM, you can decide to root it or not. Also you can unroot again just as easily.

They've been trying to unlock the thing for ages now. Some people thought the 2.1 update might give them some clues, but it hasnt.
