ChinaTimes claims to have information from Apple’s iPhone component suppliers that orders have been placed for shipments of 4 million units of new iPhones expected to be ready by the middle of the year. The iPhones will allegedly be a combination of 3 new models, consisting of an EDGE-only device, a 3G-capable model and a model made exclusively for the Chinese market.
Apple have announced that they have already passed 900 million downloaded apps and are on their way to 1 billion. To celebrate, they are launching a promotion where people can enter for a chance to win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro —worth over $13,000. To enter, all you have to do is download any app in the App Store and you’ll automatically be entered to win. Not sure if this is exclusive to the US, but it’s worth a shot!
Apple is inviting all registered iPhone app developers to test their apps with the Apple Push Notification service for the first time. Prior to this, the service was available for testing by just a select few developers. Now Apple has invited all registered developers to the program.
Boy Genius Report has published several more iPhone 3.0 beta screenshots. The screenshots show a new videos category in what appears to be the Photo app, as well as a few more settings options, accessibility entry, and what could possibly be voice dialing. According to the source, the new 3.0 software adds support for OpenGL ES v2.0. There was a mysterious reference to something called “ChinaBrick” in some of the revisions to the firmware, which might be a reference to a Chinese-specific iPhone with no 3G or Wi-Fi. Lastly, the source says that the new video capability, if true (which is looking more and more likely) will almost certainly only work on a new hardware version of the iPhone only, and not work on the current iPhone models.
And then lastly, Macroumours have received some very convincing evidence that video recording will be a feature in the next iPhone. A screenshot of the latest iPhone beta shows what appears to be the interface for recording video on an iPhone. It’s similar to the current Camera app with the addition of a toggle for video recording. The screen is only visible when a certain configuration file is altered to say that a video camera is present.
