ISPA hosted their ISP conference, iWeek, last week and a good time was had by all.
iWeek is a long-standing industry conference for ISPs that manages to attract superb speakers each year and 2009 was no exception.
One of The Pirate Bay founders, Peter Sunde, presented and his take on copyright infringement was both unique and refreshing. He is a strong campaigner for the right to copy content and postulated that human learning requires us to copy information.
Another very entertaining speaker was Rick Shera who presented a case study of New Zealand and how they tackled the issue of ISPs being forced to act as gatekeepers in this copyright tussle currently underway. He had a few very interesting things to say about the record companies and warned that they are very good at what they do – lobbying government and other bodies to enforce copyright laws in their favour.
But by far the best event was the Wednesday night casino evening. It was a charity event and all proceeds went to The Training Initiative. Poker, roulette and Black Jack tables were the games of choice. It was surprising to see how many IT geeks were rather proficient in the art of gambling
