Thanks to our insatiable addiction to all things “reality” Australian Police have started using this to their advantage in order to identify or track down criminals.
The New South Wales Police Force are currently using both YouTube and Twitter to let you help the good guys catch the bad guys. Using Tweetreel to post CCTV videos and pictures of “people of interest” in various cases, and YouTube to post footage of Police raids the New South Wales Police Force has been able to create an interest from the public in participating in crime prevention.
The social web network has massive potential – if you consider the 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon principal, but one has to wonder if how long it will take before authorities cross the line and start using facial recognition technology to snoop through all your Twitter pics.
However, it is a step in the right direction for policing, especially as users have admitted to its addictive nature, but with our 3rd world approach to the internet here is South Africa, it may take a while before we see anything of this sort here.
