Graffiti perpetrators can now be tracked using a hi-tech system that uses GPS, digital photography and computer databases reported the BBC.
Cleaning graffiti in US cities is costing them approximately $10 billion a year which makes this new system, called GAITS (Graffiti Analysis/Intelligence Tracking System), a possible money saver.
GAITS keeps a permanent record of graffiti which is then used to compile a database that is used to trace the artists or criminals, depending on which side of the fence you sit.
In South Africa where our police force of over extended as it is, it may not be a bad idea to implement more systems of this nature to make their lives easier.
Graffiti is definitely one of those crimes that most South Africans would rate as low priority but tracing graffiti perpetrators, especially in gang controlled areas where graffiti is a way of marking their territory, GAITS could assist.
Using technology to ease the burden of our police force is something that the SAPS will have to look into, especially if they want to only give their work force a 6% raise.
The chances are they will find if increasingly difficult to procure top quality police personnel which makes technology your best friend.
