Unicom halves cheapest 3G tariff:
China Unicom – the country’s second largest operator – has cut the minimum monthly fee for its 3G service by more than half to attract more users, reports Bloomberg. The operator announced yesterday that it has cut its lowest monthly 3G tariff to CNY46 (US$6.9) from CNY96 previously. “The new 3G tariff packages greatly reduce the consumption threshold, while adding more minutes of local calls, and more flexible billing,” Unicom said in a statement. Unicom’s move reflects the increasingly fierce battle for 3G market share between China’s three main operators: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. According to recent figures from the Chinese regulator, the total number of 3G subscribers in China topped 38 million by the end of October. China Mobile had 16.98 million 3G connections, while China Unicom had 11.66 million. China Telecom, the country’s third largest operator, does not disclose its 3G user numbers every month but earlier said it had 9.15 million 3G users at the end of September.
Interestingly, China Mobile’s 3G lead doesn’t reflect its dominance in the country’s mobile market overall; it has only around 5 million more 3G connections than Unicom, but controls a huge 70 percent market share of China’s total mobile sector, according to Wireless Intelligence. The market-leader’s slim lead in 3G is thought to be linked to its use of China’s homegrown TD-SCDMA technology, which does not have the global support of the more popular WCDMA and EV-DO 3G technologies being used by Unicom and Telecom, respectively. China’s official Xinhua news agency reported last month that China aims to have 150 million 3G mobile users by 2011, while investment in 3G development would hit CNY400 billion.

I was going to do some research into speeds & "data threshold" but my Chinese isn't up to the task!
