Medical research using cloud computing is the correct answer! Not just any old medical research, but the high tech futuristic kind! Yes I know I am perhaps not impartial to my alma mater but the fact is there is some seriously cool stuff happening under our noses that we are not even aware of most of the time. I don’t know if it is a case of the lecturers and professors involved being shy of publicity, leaving this news to trickle down through the web over a three year period, but one can start to get a picture of exactly what it is these folks are up to.
What happened was this, back in around 2007 IBM and a couple of organizations including some corporate giants and a dozen universities around the globe decided to work together using a new IBM service called Blue Cloud. It is a cloud computing solution that is based largely on work that made services like Google, Yahoo and other companies possible. In fact, the core of the Blue Cloud system functions on an open source project started by a man who named the project after his daughter’s stuffed toy elephant. Hadoop was born in the mind of Doug Cutting now an employee at Yahoo!.
IBM is using a tweaked variation of Hadoop coupled with other system optimizers and gadgetry to provide a cloud computing environment to among others, the University of Pretoria according to online reports. The specifications of which are not entirely clear and I hope somebody at the University can give me an indication as to exactly how big the project is and what impact it is expected to make in terms of the protein research they intend to use it for.
According to ‘The Register’ “The University of Pretoria in South Africa is also getting its own Blue Cloud and will be using it for medical research related to protein folding and how it is affected by DNA interactions with medicines. A consortium of seven universities in East Africa, known as the Higher Education Alliance for Leadership Through Health, will be making use of the cloud centre in South Africa too.”
