NASA is landing another robotic creature on MARS. Around 3 million miles left to touch down; this little critter called Pheonix will hopefuly land on MARS without a dent and start doing work that I’ve been hoping for years man would be doing himself by now. How the USA could have turned from brave space explorers into scared ass remote control nutties I don’t know, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt to turn things around and get their act together. In the old days all you needed was a picture of your girlfriend and a rocket under your gut to set space records and now they are doing stuff via TV game interfaces. Eish!
Anyway I still get a buzz when stuff like this comes down perfectly, so if you are like me and like the tingle that comes only from mankind putting down something from home on another planet, then keep your peepers peeled and ready for the event of the weekend.
This lander is the brother of the doomed, crushed and destroyed Mars Polar Lander which bit space dust in 1999 because somebody forgot the BETTER part in then NASA Administrator Dan Goldin’s BETTER FASTER CHEAPER plan which aimed at continuing exploration on shoestring budgets. Whichever congress monkeys in the USA decided on budget cuts for space projects should be shot in my view. It is the one scientific program mankind should actually put ALL it’s energy behind. Okay, just my opinion. This newer version has got some upgrades and bugs fixed.
The projectile is alread eight miles off target area but trying to hit a target (or even MARS for that matter) is the stuff for legends and 8 miles is forgivable I guess. Hell I think they still deserve tax cuts if they pull this one off without too much of a problem.
They have a backup plan that needs to be executed eight hours before atmospheric entry procedures start. I hope they won’t have to use this, which obviously includes an extra orbit or two should it be necessary.
Should things go off properly it will hit the atmosphere at close to 20800km/h which is enough to make any person’s stomach turn. WHAT A RIDE THAT WILL BE ONE DAY FOR HUMANS!!!
