Joseph Smarr, Marc Canter, Robert Scoble, and Michael Arrington have started a discussion on a digital Bill of Rights, aimed at users of social web sites.
Instead of it being ‘carved in stone’, they blogged this bill of rights in an attempt to start a discussion on the topic.
ZDNet is already speculating about the longevity of such a bill, comparing it to the U.S. Bill of Rights.
This debate is in answer to sites like Facebook, Google, Bebo, MySpace and others who control the information of its users. ZDNet calls this ‘a kind of tax on data freedom’.
Will it follow the same route as the blogger Code of Conduct from Tim O’Reilly which received so much criticism? Ars technica referred to it as the ‘tyranny of good intentions’.
My guess is that this new bll of rights will be much better received, for at least two good reasons.
Firstly, the authors launched it as a debate, not a solution. People will be able to contribute to it and change it.
Secondly, it’s much easier when it’s ‘us versus them’. This bill of rights have the feel of a us small guys fighting against them big evil companies (watch out Google!).
