According to a SAPA report, the SAPS have made a concerted effort to crack down on crime and it is starting to pay dividends.
Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the SAPS, said that around July 2006 a joint strategy was put in place involving the metro police and the police.
To date it has resulted in the confiscation of more than 1000 illegal firearms, reduced robbery within the inner city by 63%, reduced smash and grab theft out of motor vehicles by 51%, reduced vehicle thefts by 12%, the arrests of 2 954 drunk drivers and 1881 fines to people with illegal electrical connections.
I for one have seen more metro police and police men on our streets. Previously it was tough to spot the metro cops and when you did see one, they invariably only came out of hiding over the holiday period looking like vultures waiting to make their quotas for the December deadline.
Nowadays I see them doing more than just fining speedsters. In our area they regularly set up roadblocks on a Friday and Saturday night and they are always friendly and polite, at least if you’re sober.
The same goes for our cops, they’re around more and I’m always glad to see them patrolling my area. Previously they could only be found hiding out in the station or else mooching around at the 24/7 garage on the corner.
A more visible police force is exactly what is needed to curb the crime in SA and it’s super to see our cops out there making a difference.
