Let me come out and say it, I am a fatty. I have been a fatty for over a decade now and my body mass index is not showing any signs of giving up the fight to stay inflated. Being fat is becoming more challenging in today’s society. The threats from the broader public are becoming more vocal and more aggressive by the day. The doctors probably have the most poignant take on it all by advising against obesity due to medical concerns. I don’t have to visit a doctor to know that me being a fatty is dangerous. But even if it is dangerous, is it anybody else’s business?

Should anybody else take it upon themselves to judge people like me just because we are fat? We do live in a very judgemental society. We asked smokers to please smoke in separation but later took it upon ourselves to not leave it there but reduce the number of places they separated themselves to. No more open space for you guys now the open air is ours, you must go inside and smoke in the tiny room we give you! YEAH DEMOCRACY! Yes, smoking is bad for the individual but the effects of it on other people in an open air environment doesn’t seem to be more affecting than fumes from the traffic driving by or even less perhaps. All I know is that the vendetta against the vices of man will make for a dull society in the end. But I am getting off point here. The issue is being overweight and this is not a vice it is living on the edge, physically and mentally. But is it anybody else’s business?
A favourite screenwriter, actor and director of mine, Kevin Smith was recently tossed off a flight by American airliner, SouthWest Airlines for being too fat. He apparently broke their guidebook rule of not fitting comfortably into his seat and the pilot removed him from the flight. If you follow him in Twitter you would know all about it by his non stop reaction to it. Smith was scheduled to fly Southwest on Sunday after speaking at the Macworld Expo Conference. He purchased two seats for a specific flight, yet arriving at the airport ahead of schedule he was able to snag the final standby seat on an earlier departure. And right there the crap hit the proverbial fan! Even though he could buckle up and get both armrests down he was still asked to leave. Somebody obviously complained. Maybe somebody who didn’t like a movie of his perhaps?

The reaction to his indignity on Twitter forced SouthWest to get him back onto another flight and they ended up apologising on their website and on Twitter. To top it all off they gave him a $100 voucher, which I guess you can use for in flight snacks…

Another director that used to be pretty big is Peter Jackson, the man behind the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. He was huge and lost weight. He looks like a hobbit now. A very skinny one. It is possible, but I wonder what he had to do to get it right. He was bigger than me if I judge the pictures right. I haven’t flown recently but my last flight was pretty uncomfortable. If weight restrictions hit the air here in South Africa I will be stuffed as I am sure would be a lot of people. I wonder if we fatties aren’t perhaps in the majority, then we can rule democratically and just for kicks pick on the skinny buggers out there. Those skinny people with the super fast metabolisms that can down a box of chocolates every 10 minutes and still lose weight. Those smug buggers who sit and eat MacDonald’s all day and drink sugary sodas like chain smokers would smoke a cigarette if it wasn’t unacceptable to smoke indoors. In this society I am however forced to conform. I am forced to be healthy and exercise now. Let me tell you, it sucks and it is hard! Very hard!

Sitting in front of the computer too long without exercise doesn’t help either. For interest sake I would like you to vote on this issue.
