SA mobile operators in on Google Calendar SMS service

I am toying with something I only recently discovered. I am not exactly sure when this happened to be honest but it is a rather fantastic service that I am sure many more people than just me were unaware of. I am talking about Google Calendar reminders via SMS. Yes it is not new, but what is interesting is the fact that three major mobile service providers in South Africa are in on the act and are relaying Google calendar SMS reminders all around us and when I asked some people who I consider to be well informed with all things web and gadget related they also didn’t know about the existence of this service in South Africa.

This is a fresh breeze instead of the usual “US and Canada Only” messages we’ve become so used to in these backwaters of the world wide web. It is difficult to tell if there are any costs to the service in South Africa, but from what I have read it is a completely free service. It is easy to set up and easy to use.

Vodacom, MTN and Cell C have all partnered with Google to relay the reminders that doesn’t even act as little spam missiles. It is just a clean honest service that could be useful to perhaps those of us who don’t have or perhaps don’t want a smart phone. In today’s urban jungle, calendars on the move are becoming more and more essential. The normal hand held diary just doesn’t cut it anymore for some of us.
